Wait - it was about *what*? - Film and lit crit about disability

Film and lit crit about disability. Wait - it was about *what*? February 19th, 2013. This was one of those strange experiences you get when you reread a book as an adult that you haven't read since childhood. The book in question was Burnett's The Secret Garden. Like me, you may remember it vaguely as an uplifting Victorian tale about some bratty children who become nicer people through gardening. 2013-02-19 07:04 pm (UTC). Colin, waited on hand and foot by servants but deprived of love and affection and...

Cate's happy opera day - Rosemary In Wheat

Cates ramblings on writing, opera, and (she hopes one day) writing opera. Cate's happy opera day. Sep 12th, 2012 at 11:05 PM. It seems the opera gods love me today. I wandered into the library of the Banff Centre, looking to write for a while, and in searching out a good place to camp out, I see a row of opera DVDs. Naturally, I have a look. Renée Flemming, a few other vaguely interesting ones. Then my eyes see an ultrasilm case with "Le Nozze di Figaro" on the side. Over the sexual assault line from a m...

February meta-blogging - Jackdaws love my big sphinx of quartz. Feb 5th, 2013 12:17 am. Several people have suggested I move off LiveJournal because it has a negative prestige aura surrounding it and a lot of people are unwilling to read or link to LiveJournals. It might bring someone into disrepute or something, or even offend patients and destroy the therapeutic relationship. So things I need to know:. 1 What blogging platforms are good? And this is my current top contender for future blog name. If...

Cates ramblings on writing, opera, and (she hopes one day) writing opera. San Francisco, Day Three. Nov 25th, 2012 at 1:45 PM. Day three in San Francisco was a fun one, if busy. Before I had left home, late look at San Francisco Opera's website allowed me to discover that Jake Heggie, the composer of Moby-Dick, was giving an interview Sunday morning, so once again, I pulled my rear end out of the comfy hotel bed and took myself on a hike through the hills of San Francisco to Grace Cathedral. Cold As I jo...

Cates ramblings on writing, opera, and (she hopes one day) writing opera. San Francisco, Day One: Long Walks and Moby-Dick (1st performance). Nov 12th, 2012 at 6:02 PM. Have I still not posted about all the San Francisco stuff? I loved, loved, being back there. It's perhaps a little clichéd and New Age-y to talk about cities having heartbeats, but I do love the rhythm of San Francisco. Have I mentioned how much I love this opera? As with so many new productions and new operas these days, Moby-Dick makes ...
