Here we are in many peoples favourite time of year, not mine unfortunately as many birds become invisible in the heavy cloak of foliage that develops during summer. Not to say I don't enjoy summer as there are plenty of things to enjoy and the warmth is certainly welcome! And a lovely brown hare taking a rest. A young black headed gull.

Reports from my walks and wildlife observations in and around the valley of Airedale, North and West Yorkshire. Thursday, 8 December 2016. Moving towards winter 2016. The leaves are falling, the daylight hours are getting shorter it can only be late autumn. Although there are probably less bird species to see they are easier to spot with less foliage on the trees and if the paths remain reasonably dry some great days can be enjoyed. The barnacle geese were all around in the fields. A male pintail duck.

There are several options for all these and Rombalds Moor, of which Ilkley Moor is a component, proved reliable again for a female wheatear. Caddis flies were eagerly accepted though! So autumn is upon us, the beauty of the trees grows each day, showers of leaves fall like golden snowflakes and the woodland paths become crunchy with the dead fall beneath our feet. Crane fly or daddy long legs, stuck in a web on my garden gate. A short walk by the canal and a swan in lovely light. A heron on the hill.

Apologies for the lack of posts recently, other wildlife projects have kept keyboard time to a minimum. The appalling weather of late now means outdoor activities are limited so I have time to catch up a bit! The visit was to RSPB Mersehead, a good reserve with plentiful and varied sightings, our first was a teal. A gannet flew by.
