Approximating Political Truth

This blog is entitled "Approximating Political Truth" in recognition of the difficulty of intelligent political discourse. In the age of "spin," accruing the information with which we can even debate a set of issues is a monumental task. It is only the first, however, in a two-step process. The second step is argument, discussion, and persuasion. The goal of this blog is to inform- or convince- only with what is factually true and discussion and argument that flows from it.

Approximating Political Truth: September 2009

http://approximatingpoliticaltruth.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, September 13, 2009. Too Many Things to Talk About! I think I spot a pattern here…). So, I’ll take these one-by-one and offer up a few quick observations:. The first and I think biggest problem that non-lawyers don’t understand is that caps on damages don’t limit frivolous. Sorry, we’ll just have to go in there and cut off the right one tomorrow. Too bad you’ll be armless, but hey, mistakes happen, right? 8221; (And yes, this does really happen). Or a customer service rep? Second, does limiting re...

Approximating Political Truth: December 2009

http://approximatingpoliticaltruth.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, December 6, 2009. Review of Salient Political Issues, December 2009 Edition. Greetings, readers. Please forgive me for my lack of writing over the last several weeks. We now have a 3-week old in the house (in addition to our 3 year old). Writing in complete sentences, much less holding a coherent thought in your head, is a bit difficult with the demands of diaper-changing and the constant entreaties of an attention-demanding child ringing in your ears. There certainly has been a lot to talk about!

Approximating Political Truth: Don't Trample the Constitution

http://approximatingpoliticaltruth.blogspot.com/2010/08/dont-trample-constitution.html

Friday, August 20, 2010. Don't Trample the Constitution. In all this talk about the Mosque or Islamic center or whatever-the-hell-it-actually-is at or near “Ground Zero,” I have heard a lot cry and hue about how “disrespectful” it is for private citizens to want to build this Muslim-whatever on private property. But, I think that there is a fairly widespread fundamental misunderstanding of how our constitutional freedoms work. You know what I’m talking about, right? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Approximating Political Truth: Election 2010 Survey: The Teabag... er... Republicans Strike Back

http://approximatingpoliticaltruth.blogspot.com/2010/10/election-2010-survey-teabag-er.html

Sunday, October 31, 2010. Election 2010 Survey: The Teabag. er. Republicans Strike Back. Here are the more interesting tidbits of this year’s election, at least to me (and apologies in advance for the Georgia focus of some of these to my non-Georgia resident friends):. 1 What’s the Deal? But would I want a person on the verge of bankruptcy who has a proven record of intervening in state programs for his own personal gain to be elected to the highest office in the state? C’mon, people! I believe that fund...

Approximating Political Truth: A Letter to President Obama

http://approximatingpoliticaltruth.blogspot.com/2010/11/letter-to-president-obama.html

Tuesday, November 16, 2010. A Letter to President Obama. Dear Mr. Obama:. You pulled out all the stops to get some kind of health care reform done. That, I can appreciate in some ways. It's not the reform that I would have chosen, but it IS an improvement. You didn't communicate what it does very well; you still have an opportunity to do so, but I guess since it's done you've moved on to other things. I suppose global warming is on the rocks at this point. Screw it, right? You tell the Republicans that y...

Musings of a Not-So-Stay-at-Home Mom. Friday, July 18, 2014. Don't Dis the Playdate. I read this blog as a result of a friend’s Facebook share: http:/ www.dadncharge.com/2014/07/banish-playdate.html? It got me thinking. I had several responses pop into my head, a number of them pretty snarky, so I’ll try to clean them up here, both in terms of organization and niceties. So, sure, let your kids have spontaneous play as much as they can. I love it when my kids have pick-up play with neighbors, and I re...

Musings of a Not-So-Stay-at-Home Mom: Vaccination

http://notsostayathomemom.blogspot.com/2012/07/vaccination.html

Musings of a Not-So-Stay-at-Home Mom. Tuesday, July 31, 2012. I firmly believe in vaccination. My kids are vaccinated. My husband is vaccinated. Even our cats are vaccinated! I actually think everyone who isn’t immune-compromised (or otherwise medically unable to be vaccinated) should be vaccinated. Yes, everyone.). I think vaccines are fantastic. We modern parents can revel in the sniffles and coughs and colds our children bring home. This is an amazing thing. I clicked the link. I read the article.

http://notsostayathomemom.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Musings of a Not-So-Stay-at-Home Mom. Sunday, January 24, 2010. I wonder how many other parents out there are “nod and smile” parents like me? Since having DD, I have learned one of the best overall parenting rules: trust your instincts, and as a result, I have become a “nod and smile” parent. Let me tell you the story. We went back to the doctor for a check-in. Still no weight gain, so he told me to use a supplemental nursing system (SNS). Ever heard of that? It’s a delightful contraption. You...For inf...

Musings of a Not-So-Stay-at-Home Mom: Missing Toy Parts? No Problem!

http://notsostayathomemom.blogspot.com/2011/09/missing-toy-parts-no-problem.html

Musings of a Not-So-Stay-at-Home Mom. Saturday, September 3, 2011. Usually, toys come and toys go, but sometimes, as all parents know, your children become attached to a particular toy (often inexplicably! And then, one day, that toy goes missing or loses a key part. What’s a parent to do? Tip #1: If a toy comes with a manual or other information, keep it. Tip #3: Never hesitate to contact a manufacturer. When I contact a manufacturer, I asked about their replacement policy. Some will replace parts (...

http://notsostayathomemom.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Musings of a Not-So-Stay-at-Home Mom. Tuesday, March 16, 2010. Ah, the sweet, sweet feeling of vindication. Remember my comments about dealing with a doctor (and nurse practitioner) aghast that I was feeding my four-month-old daughter solids? So, all that stuff they told me when DD was little? All that hell they gave me for feeding her solids at four months? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Sorry, I just had to have a moment of gleeful vindictive laughter. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). http://notsostayathomemom.blogspot.com/2015/07/allowance.html

Musings of a Not-So-Stay-at-Home Mom. Wednesday, July 29, 2015. Allowance. How much, for what, when? This topic regularly comes up with parents. There are a variety of approaches to allowances, and every family will have to decide what fits with their values, parenting style, and child’s (or children’s) personalities. When our daughter was going into first grade, we gave this issue a lot of thought. I read a couple of articles and books, including the fantastic Kids, Money, and Values. 8221; We may buy h...

Approximating Political Truth

Sunday, October 16, 2011. There are three key differences between the two movements that seem apparent to me:. 1 Occupy’s Signs Don’t Include Spelling Errors. Remember all those emails from last year with pictures that people had taken of the signs being used in at the Tea Party rallies? It was an illustration of borderline illiteracy. (As a refresher, check this. All right, so what’s your point Mr. Smartypants? That one group’s smart and the other’s not? And they’re not worthless hippies! This will be a...
