Black Dog: Getting ready for Maker Fair Detroit, Part 1
http://blackdogroboticsblog.blogspot.com/2010/06/getting-ready-for-maker-fair-detroit.html
Saturday, June 26, 2010. Getting ready for Maker Fair Detroit, Part 1. Nothing like a deadline for motivation to complete a project, and I NOW have a deadline - the Detroit Maker Fair. On July 31-August 1 at Henry Ford Museum. My main goal is to get some more booth space for the Frog Force. Exhibit, but I'd like to get some of my own stuff out of the notebook and into hardware and software. First up is the Coasterbot, which has a couple of improvements since the last post. Next up is an Arduino based LED...
Black Dog: March 2010
http://blackdogroboticsblog.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Friday, March 12, 2010. Talk to 'The Judge'. This should have been a really simple project, maybe an hour max. It really should not have taken all last Sunday afternoon, if I had just remembered one key fact. I've been involved in putting on the annual Pinewood Derby for the Novi Girl Scouts for the last 7 years or so, and I did a few years of Cub Scout Derbys before that. I'm the Bernie Ecclestone. Of Novi Pinewood. Our current setup is a 4 lane BestTrack. The Judge runs on 3 AA batteries; 4.5 volts...
Black Dog: It does actually work!
http://blackdogroboticsblog.blogspot.com/2010/05/encoders-work.html
Thursday, May 20, 2010. It does actually work! The mouse encoders read correctly, they can keep up with the wheel rotation (only about 50rpm max), and everything fits on the motor plate of the MkII chassis. Black Dog Robotics dyno test cell. Right now I'm running a modified version of the PS2 example. PS2 mouse encoder reader, and the Arduino PID Library. The amount of knowledge out there and everyone's willingness to share it just amazes me. You really have to love the Arduino community!
Black Dog: July 2010

Tuesday, July 27, 2010. We interrupt this blog for a short rant. GM has finally defeated me in my quest to change my own oil. Should be easy - a13mm socket, a wrench filter, a drain pan. Maybe a socket extension. Better sell it before it needs new spark plugs! This weekend is Detroit Maker Fair at Henry Ford - going to help the Frog Force, Novi FLL teams, and show off some of my stuff as well. Should be fun! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Cat VI: First ride with the Greyhounds: I did not know Strava Suffer Scores went to 'Epic'
http://cat6biker.blogspot.com/2013/03/first-ride-with-greyhounds-i-did-not.html
Adventures of a RACING GREYHOUNDS puppy. Sunday, March 10, 2013. First ride with the Greyhounds: I did not know Strava Suffer Scores went to 'Epic'. Wow I knew this was going to be hard, that's why I signed up. But Saturday was epic - even Strava says so. I've never really done group training rides before, and to get faster I need to consistently try to keep up with people faster than me. Judging from the ride on Saturday, finding people faster than me is NOT going to be a problem. In 2 weeks. The id...
Cat VI: 23 March 2013 Race 1 - Barry-Roubaix
http://cat6biker.blogspot.com/2013/04/23-march-2013-race-1-barry-roubaix.html
Adventures of a RACING GREYHOUNDS puppy. Monday, April 15, 2013. 23 March 2013 Race 1 - Barry-Roubaix. Barry-Roubaix roads, Thursday before the race. One race down. The 2013 season started March 23 at Barry-Roubaix, the Killer Gravel Road Race. After a couple of test rides on dirt roads around home I decided to take the Anthem 29er, but on what tires? A nice place to change, and no last minute rush to get to registration. By 10am Saturday, it was looking like the best day of the week for a dirt road race...
Cat VI: Beer Me
http://cat6biker.blogspot.com/2013/01/beer-me.html
Adventures of a RACING GREYHOUNDS puppy. Saturday, January 26, 2013. Interesting data point from last year's riding - 1 beer = 8.0 miles on the road, or 3.25 miles on the mountain bike. Probably skewed that much due to more race training and racing on the mountain bike, more touring and commuting rides on the road. My Garmin Edge 500. Tracks heart rate, position, distance, speed, cadence, elevation, could do power if I had a power meter (but Strava. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Am I getting mys.
Cat VI: Numbers don't lie
http://cat6biker.blogspot.com/2013/02/numbers-don-lie.html
Adventures of a RACING GREYHOUNDS puppy. Monday, February 11, 2013. Interesting event with the team Sunday - 1km on a CompuTrainer. To get your average power for 1 minute, then onto a scale to determine watts/kg. The bottom line - 418 watts, 214 pounds/97 kg, 4.3 watts/kg, 38th of 39 Greyhounds. So, what's realistic for me? The big drop between 15 and 20 second is probably a transition from sitting to standing. Or standing to sitting. I was already seeing stars at that point. Strength training and yoga a...
Cat VI: February 2013
http://cat6biker.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Adventures of a RACING GREYHOUNDS puppy. Sunday, February 17, 2013. Funny how the next 2 weeks will define a lot of what my bike season looks like even though right now it's 24 degrees, there's fresh snow on the ground, and the only riding I'm doing today is a spin class at the Sports Club. But we're well into event registration season. Derek and I have successfully registered for our 4th DALMAC. A nice ride, except for the one day every year when it's cold and wet. Komen Ride for the Cure. To get your a...
Cat VI: I never thought about that...
http://cat6biker.blogspot.com/2013/02/i-never-thought-about-that.html
Adventures of a RACING GREYHOUNDS puppy. Saturday, February 2, 2013. I never thought about that. This month's (Feb 2013) VeloNews. Has a very interesting article by Caley Fretz and Friction Facts. About the efficiency of chain lubes, or lack thereof. Maybe 'interesting' is overstating the case for non-engineering nerds, but certainly useful. I always just cleaned the chain and put on some more White Lightning. Probably subliminally influenced by 'Lighting' - must be fast, right? XC ski wax chart. Like th...

Cat VI: The rubber hits the road, if I can get it to hold air
http://cat6biker.blogspot.com/2013/03/the-rubber-hits-road-if-i-can-get-it-to.html
Adventures of a RACING GREYHOUNDS puppy. Sunday, March 10, 2013. The rubber hits the road, if I can get it to hold air. I'm just about ready for my first training ride with the Racing Greyhounds. All I need is some air. I have to say right up front I love my Stan's NoTubes. And installing the rim strips. I used an air compressor to get the beads to seat initially - I'm not sure how you get air in fast enough to seat the beads with a floor pump. Workforce Dual Foot Inflator and Gauge. 1/4" Male NPT to 1/8...

Thursday, February 14, 2013. When starting a new project, RTFM first! How do you turn this. Short answer is you don't, you order a Computrainer from Racermate. They charge you around $1600 and then you sell the old one on Craig's List. Long answer is you don't, but I think you can get some of the same features by automating the old mag trainer. Equipment list is:. Arduino with USB or XBee communication to a PC for data logging/display. Reed switch speed and cadence pickups, suitably debounced. How many t...
