Update on NumPy acceleration. I've been looking into accelerating NumPy using TensorFlow. And the results have been pretty interesting. Here's a quick update. Tldr: TensorFlow adds a lot of overhead and doesn't speed up CPU execution, making converting NumPy- TensorFlow less promising. TensorFlow's ability to target GPUs, though, makes up for the overheads, but not all NumPy programs are GPU-friendly. The first challenge in a project like this is to set up a good goal. It's easy to find. Even scikit-lear...

Bitcoin vulnerability « kmod's blog

http://blog.kevmod.com/2013/12/bitcoin-vulnerability

Today seems like a pretty good day to rag on bitcoin. So I thought I'd post about something I've been thinking about ever since I experimented with writing my own miner. Since the goal of that project was educational, I went through it in a way that most other people probably don't: I built a complete system (everything from the miner to the network interfaces) from scratch (no bitcoin-related libraries), which I think gave me some visibility into parts of Bitcoin that not many people see.

Http:/ www.wired.com/2014/08/isp-bitcoin-theft/. Looks like this is an implementation of what I described previously. This guy used BGP to route internet traffic to him - the article is light on the technical details but my guess is that he masqueraded as a popular bitcoin pool and gave out orders that benefited him rather than the real pool. Today seems like a pretty good day to rag on bitcoin. And what I discovered is. How trivially hackable the system is right now. The current state of the Bitcoin min...

Myduino: creating a low-cost arduino substitute « kmod's blog

http://blog.kevmod.com/2013/08/myduino-creating-a-low-cost-arduino-substitute

Myduino: creating a low-cost arduino substitute. One issue I've quickly run into is that I want to embark on new projects, but don't want to completely disassemble my existing projects in order to get the parts I need. For some parts of the project, like resistors and wire, it's pretty easy to over-buy those and not need to scavenge old projects for them. For other things like breadboards, it's less easy, but at $5 a breadboard. I don't mind over-buying these as well. Another option I've tried is to use ...

Followup: picking an ARM chip « kmod's blog

http://blog.kevmod.com/2014/03/followup-picking-an-arm-chip

Followup: picking an ARM chip. In my last post. I guess I had always hoped that picking a microcontroller within a line would be like selecting a CPU for your computer: you select the performance/price tradeoff you want and just buy it. But with microcontrollers I guess there's a bit more lock-in since you have to recompile things, change programmer settings, etc. Subscribe to comments on this post ). Leave a comment Cancel reply. Quick report: Altera vs Xilinx for hobbyists « kmod's blog

http://blog.kevmod.com/2015/04/quick-report-altera-vs-xilinx-for-hobbyists

Quick report: Altera vs Xilinx for hobbyists. I've done a number of projects involving Xilinx FPGAs and CPLDs, and honestly I'm frustrated with them enough to be interested in trying out one of their competitors. This is pretty rant-y, so take it with a grain of salt but some of my gripes include:. Simply awful toolchain support. The standard approach is to reverse-engineer the Xilinx file formats and write your own tooling on top of them. Update - looks someone else posted a much lengthier blog post.

Using AJAX to load JSON data from server. February 16, 2015. This is a basic technique for using AJAX to load some JSON data from your backend server. This example assumes you are going to use jQuery. Let’s use an example of a refresh button and some time based data. This means you have a UI that has a refresh button and you want to get the latest set of data from your backend. You might have a button on your UI similar to this:. Button id=data-refresh-btn type=button Refresh /button . Speed up dd write ...

Dorking Around With Electronics. Tektronix PS2521G Power Supply Teardown. November 8th, 2013. Anyways, on with the teardown! Front Panel (After I cleaned it). Back showing the “wind tunnel”. What’s interesting about the “wind tunnel” heatsinking is that it’s actually made up of four separate heatsinks with small baffles between them for insulation and air tightness. This was done because the large TO-3 transistors are directly mounted to the heatsinks, without any insulating p...There’s a GPIB boar...
