Happy birthday, Louisa May Alcott! – Children's Literature at the University of Cambridge
https://cambridgechildrenslit.wordpress.com/2016/11/29/happy-birthday-louisa-may-alcott
Children's Literature at the University of Cambridge. November 29, 2016. November 29, 2016. Happy birthday, Louisa May Alcott! If she’d still been (miraculously) alive, Louisa May Alcott would be turning 184 today. How did I know this? Am I a rabid Alcott-ian? Keep Laurie close to my heart always? Nope The answer is Google! Google has snatched Alcott’s 184th birthday out of (more or less) obscurity and celebrated it with its doodle! To quote from the doodle page:. Doodle by Sophie Diao. A wise old owl.

chaosmos - out of chaos comes order: November 2014
http://chaosmos-outofchaoscomesorder.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Chaosmos - out of chaos comes order. Saturday, 15 November 2014. If you could do so. If not tell it. Showing helps the reader believe in the story and live vicariously through your main character. They become part of the story. I am sure you can all remember stories where you've become so involved in the story it has become real to you. Well that is 'good showing.'. As a writer telling a scene is much easier than showing it and often in your first draft there will be loads of telling but don't worry you ...

Chaosmos - out of chaos comes order. Sunday, 1 March 2015. Diversity - Windows and Mirrors. Windows and mirrors is what diversity in children's fiction should be all about. A chance for children to look at how other children lead their lives but also a chance for children to see themselves in stories. Recently Beth Cox and Alexandra Strick of Inclusive Mind. Don't forget to keep an eye out for the Golden Egg Academy. This is the Piano Guys and What Makes You Beautiful because diversity is beautiful.

Chaosmos - out of chaos comes order. Sunday, 9 February 2014. The importance of reading. A few books to read. Lionel Shriver has written an interesting article in The Guardian about ' How Not To Read. She talks about how precious time reading books is and how it shouldn't be wasted on bad books or books that are not right for that particularly time in your life. In the meantime, what has been your most favourite book recently? How Not To Read. The importance of reading. Saturday, 1 February 2014. Write w...

chaosmos - out of chaos comes order: Writing into 2015 - it is not a race
http://chaosmos-outofchaoscomesorder.blogspot.com/2015/01/writing-into-2015-it-is-not-race.html
Chaosmos - out of chaos comes order. Thursday, 1 January 2015. Writing into 2015 - it is not a race. It is a long but good journey. Happy New Year. It is 2015, the start of a brand new shiny year. Thank goodness. 2014 for me wasn't the greatest and I know for a lot of other people it wasn't too good either so 2015 has a lot of pressure riding on it to be better. I hope it's feeling up to it! I love seeing the story develop and emerge like a butterfly out of a chrysalis. Writing is a journey not a race.

Chaosmos - out of chaos comes order. Saturday, 17 January 2015. Agents and Editors.they are human beings you know! Sometimes the way writers behave really embarrasses me and they give the rest of us a bad name. I have to say they are often the inexperienced ones. I am Facebook friends with the wonderful Carole Blake of Blake Friedmann. Firstly those awful letters/emails. Some of which come across as almost threatening! Nicola Morgan has written some excellent books. Which she is currently writing an a ne...

Chaosmos - out of chaos comes order. Friday, 18 July 2014. The art of procrastination. I am also supposed to be writing this blog. I haven't posted for over a month. Bad Vanessa! How many different colour grey horses can you get? And that isn't even thinking about the academic book. Don't even mention the pictures I collect (some of you I know use Pinterest) I don't but I have a file of photos which reflect the book I am writing and I like to look for and collect - more procrastination. Then of course yo...

chaosmos - out of chaos comes order: December 2014
http://chaosmos-outofchaoscomesorder.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Chaosmos - out of chaos comes order. Sunday, 21 December 2014. Happy Winter Solstice - the light is coming. When writing dialogue don't write it the way we speak it in real life. That would be so boring! If not keep it in. Again less is more at times. Dialogue should be short and sharp unless there is a good reason for a character to be verbose. This song is for no other reasons than it has some very happy memories connected to it and because I am looking to the future now. Sunday, 14 December 2014.
