화학은 물질을 연구하는 학문으로서 물질 자체의 연구는 물론이거니와 다양한 물질을 기반으로 하고 있는 모든 과학과 기술 영역에서 핵심적인 역할을 하고 있습니다. 시대에 따라 수없이 많은 새로운 물질들이 만들어지고 있을 뿐만 아니라 이들 물질과 관련된 새로운 산업체들이 도처에서 속속 출현하고 있습니다. 식품, 환경, 제약, 신소재, 에너지, 고분자, 의류, 스포츠 및 첨단 수사 분야에 이르기까지 화학을 배경으로 한 인재를 필요로 하고 있습니다. 기초과학의 한 분야로서 물질의 성질, 구조 및 반응과 이에 따르는 에너지의 출입을 연구하는 화학이라는 학문에 바탕을 두고 있는 목포대 화학과는 목포대학교의 교시인 창조, 덕의, 봉사의 정신을 실천하고, 지역사회는 물론 국내 외 화학관련 산업현장, 연구기관, 중등 및 고등 교육기관 및 사회 곳곳에서 능동적이며 창조적으로 활동할 수 있는, 그리고 인성 덕성 지성을 고루 갖춘 우수한 화학 인재를 양성하는데 교육의 목적을 둔다. 다양한 취업 프로그램에 능동적으로 참여한다.
