RIP Richard Henry | The chicken or the egg

http://chickenoreggblog.wordpress.com/2011/01/14/rip-richard-henry

The chicken or the egg. And other biological matters. This DNA fingerprint of kakapo clearly shows how distinct Richard Henry was. His fingerprint is marked with an asterisk - all the others are from Stewart Is. birds. More from Stuff.co.nz:. One of the key players in the Kakapo Recovery Programme was found dead on Codfish Island yesterday, marking the end of an era. Kakapo Richard Henry was discovered by one of the recovery team members after what was believed to be an 80-year life. Disclaimer: I was pa...

Cheetah genetic diversity revisited | The chicken or the egg

http://chickenoreggblog.wordpress.com/2011/02/04/cheetah-genetic-diversity-revisited

The chicken or the egg. And other biological matters. Cheetah genetic diversity revisited. Another chapter has been added to the story of genetic variation in the cheetah. With a paper out in next month’s. Molecular Biology and Evolution. Back in 1985, Stephen O’Brien and colleagues at the National Cancer Institute in Maryland reported extremely low levels of genetic variation in cheetahs. The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is found mainly in southern and eastern Africa. Found that the population was general...

New Zealand forests still threatened, but not THAT threatened | The chicken or the egg

http://chickenoreggblog.wordpress.com/2011/02/08/new-zealand-forests-still-threatened-but-not-that-threatened

The chicken or the egg. And other biological matters. New Zealand forests still threatened, but not THAT threatened. Last week Conservation International published its list of the world’s ten most threatened forest hotspots. Apparently New Zealand was confused with New Caledonia, and is actually ranked number 22 on the list, with 22% of its original forest cover remaining. Easy mistake to make, I guess (although the folks over at Kiwiblog. You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.0.

Tuatara tuesday – sex determination in a warming world | The chicken or the egg

http://chickenoreggblog.wordpress.com/2010/11/09/tuatara-tuesday-sex-determination-in-a-warming-world

The chicken or the egg. And other biological matters. Tuatara tuesday – sex determination in a warming world. Seeing as reptile reproduction. Seems to be a bit of a hot topic right now, I thought it was time to talk about sex determination in tuatara. A partially buried tuatara nest on Stephens Island. Of the University of Western Australia predicted that, under current “worst-case” global warming scenarios, populations like North Brother Island will produce all-male clutches by the mid 2080s. The Atavism: a new feed

http://theatavism.blogspot.com/2009/06/new-feed.html

Friday, June 26, 2009. This may be a blog but at my heart I'm just not a blogger. Instant reactions, frequent posting and controvesy are all beyond my ability. Still, it's nice to have this place to add things that I really think the internet ought to know, either contributing to a discussion started somewhere else or having some geekish discovery indexed. Labels: might interest someone. Posted by David Winter 11:28 AM. Just the good bits. The author, elsewhere. Beauty in Science and Nature.

The Atavism: Starting again

http://theatavism.blogspot.com/2007/05/starting-again.html

Thursday, May 24, 2007. Welcome to the Atavism. This is my new blog, I used to blog at Science and Sensibility. Partly because I retardedly put an underscore in the URL when I set the account up. And partly because itâ s fun for a scientist to have a creative project like putting a logo/webdesign together. (If there is something wrong with this template please yell out, I have only checked it out on a few systems). Posted by David Winter 2:55 PM. Just the good bits. The author, elsewhere. The Atavism: Elsewhere

http://theatavism.blogspot.com/2013/01/elsewhere.html

Thursday, January 31, 2013. A couple of links that might be of interest for readers of The Atavism:. I've been really remiss in linking to interview I did with Veronika Meduna for Radio NZ's Our Changing World. The bugs Veronika and I visited will all be familiar to readers here. The online Evolutionary Biology Journal Club. Is getting back together for "Season 2". If you don't know, a journal club. Posted by David Winter 12:46 PM. Just the good bits. The author, elsewhere. The Atavism: Sunday Spinelessness - Mostly True Facts about land snails

http://theatavism.blogspot.com/2013/02/sunday-spinelessness-mostly-true-facts.html

Sunday, February 17, 2013. Sunday Spinelessness - Mostly True Facts about land snails. The ailing laptop on which I write these posts has developed a new symptom - a non-deterministic keyboard. So, I hope you'll excuse me if I just paste a link and get on with something less annoying than trying to write a post via a cellphone. It's a pretty good link too. Ze Frank. S "True Facts" series of zoological oddities has finally got to the best creatures on earth, land snails:. Posted by David Winter 1:43 PM.

The Atavism: Sunday Spinelessness - damselflies

http://theatavism.blogspot.com/2009/11/sunday-spinelessness-damselflies.html

Sunday, November 15, 2009. Sunday Spinelessness - damselflies. It's been a bit of a wintry Sunday here in Dunedin so I'll dedicate today's round of Sunday Spinelessness to a group of insects we should see a lot more of as summer takes hold, the Damselflies ( Odonata. You can probably tell just by looking at Xanthocnemis. And Waitakere City Council's website. Which includes a 'profile' written in the first person). There are six species of damselfly described in New Zealand - three more Xanthocnemis.

Sunday, February 3, 2013. Sunday Spinelessness - Cannibalism in the garden. The most common jumping spider in our garden, Trite auricoma,. With the remains of it most recent meal. a smaller T. auricoma:. N this species males actually pirouette their way into their mate's fangs, and females take up the offer about 65% of the time. New Zealand's endemic red back relative, the katipo. Does not exhibit this behavior (nor does the North American black widow, despite the name). Posted by David Winter 7:51 PM.

The Atavism: A Very Special edition of Sunday Spinelessness

http://theatavism.blogspot.com/2014/01/a-very-special-edition-of-sunday.html

Sunday, January 26, 2014. A Very Special edition of Sunday Spinelessness. Wow, it's been a long time since I wrote something here. Let's see if I can remember how this goes: I find a weird-looking bug and take some photos. Then I enthuse about that bug for a few paragraphs, hoping some broader point will emerge from all my geekery. All right then, here's a neat creature I found recently in the Wellington Botanic Garderns. It's Helpis minitabunda. The Australian Bronze Jumping Spider:. Ana and I are start...

The Atavism: Sequencing the tuatara genome

http://theatavism.blogspot.com/2013/06/sequencing-tuatara-genome.html

Monday, June 17, 2013. Sequencing the tuatara genome. Things have been quite around here for a while. Largely for the typical boring reasons, the pressure to get work done and on to journals that might publish it leaving little spare time. On top of that the non-science time I've had lately has taken up by what I think will be a very important piece of science communication: a blog documenting The Tuatara Genome Poject. The Atavism: Sunday Spinelessness - Native bees again

http://theatavism.blogspot.com/2013/01/sunday-spinelessness-native-bees-again.html

Sunday, January 27, 2013. Sunday Spinelessness - Native bees again. Last year, at about this time, I wrote a little about our native bees. So, to illustrate the original post I used half-drowned bees, scooped out from a swimming pool. The time it took the bees to dry out gave me a chance to take the photos, but I set them up on exactly. The type of flower they'd never visit in the wild. So, not only did I cheat, but the photos I took actively misled about the true nature of bees! Just the good bits.
