As a junior in high school in 1984, Hollar sank the two winning free throws to help Warsaw win the Indiana State Basketball Championship. He continued his basketball career playing for DePauw University. He redshirted his freshman year to make the movie Hoosiers, playing the feisty character, Rade Butcher.
