First Principles | In the Present Tense
https://edoutlook.wordpress.com/2010/10/12/first-principles
In the Present Tense. October 12, 2010. Filed under: Bible study. Culture and the Bible. Women in the Bible. 8212; edoutlook @ 4:00 am. I apologize for the long delay between posts. I’ve been unbelievably busy. This blog is for believers. If you don’t believe in God, there are other posts I’ll write just for your consideration. My friends know I don’t insist people believe what I do, but welcome honest questions. Jesus demonstrated this approach in the question regarding divorce. He was asked if men ...
Economic Justice | In the Present Tense

In the Present Tense. February 25, 2011. Filed under: Culture and the Bible. 8212; edoutlook @ 6:07 pm. I recently was asked a question about “economic justice.” Here’s an adaptation of my reply. The problem simply comes down to this: Justice in the human realm is relatively easy to define. Equality before the law, and what is known as procedural due process, having the law applied fairly and consistently. Even this has its problems, but they are not insurmountable. There are individuals, I’ll use ...

In the Present Tense. August 11, 2010. Filed under: Culture and the Bible. 8212; edoutlook @ 5:26 am. Of course, one big problem is that the lists change over time. At one point, the organ was considered taboo, since it had been associated with gladiatorial combat. Come to think of it, I’ve known quite a few churches where “Who gets to play the organ” battles were somewhat reminiscent of gladiatorial combat. But I digress. But why should that be? If Christ can cast demons out of human beings who were onc...
The Siren Call of the Popular Cause | In the Present Tense
https://edoutlook.wordpress.com/2010/12/11/the-siren-call-of-the-popular-cause
In the Present Tense. December 11, 2010. The Siren Call of the Popular Cause. 8212; edoutlook @ 5:46 am. It seems every few years someone discovers that the Bible teaches whatever the latest philosophical fad is. In some ways this is inevitable. What am I talking about? In the early 19th century, retired sea captain Joseph Bates became deeply involved, and committed his considerable energies, into two worthy causes: Temperance, and Abolition. Surely, worthy causes, and in line with Bible teachings. Some ...

In the Present Tense. August 19, 2010. Filed under: Christianity and Politics. Culture and the Bible. 8212; edoutlook @ 3:38 am. Resuming the stages of faith and leadership. When we get to the dark night of the soul II, to Gethsemane, we are overwhelmed with the sense of futility. We know who we are, we know our mission in life, but it seems that we will make the sacrifice and receive nothing in return. After a whole lifetime of seeking and struggling, is this all there is? But of course the darkness can...

How to Pass the Baton . . . « Elijah's Run
https://elijahsrun.wordpress.com/2009/09/28/how-to-pass-the-baton
Passing the baton to a new Adventist generation. How to Pass the Baton . . . Passing the baton is the most important part of a relay race, for the simple reason that the race ends if the baton cannot be passed. Those members who claim to be concerned about “finishing the work” should be concerned about passing the baton, for there can be few things of more importance. We need to face the truth. Many of our congregations are aging and languishing because too many of us are not seen as living a faith t...

Passing the baton to a new Adventist generation. Adventism’s Blind Spot. If you grew up Adventist in a certain time, you remember the AY (what was then the MV) motto: The Gospel to the World in This Generation. It was a worthy motto. Indeed, it had been a worthy motto since the beginning of the youth work in the late 1800’s. When I first recited it, in the late 1950’s, something seemed a little strange about it, but I didn’t know what it was. The Gospel to the World in This Generation. For five, six, and...

Why this Blog? « Elijah's Run
https://elijahsrun.wordpress.com/2009/09/25/why-this-blog
Passing the baton to a new Adventist generation. From our earliest days, Adventists have identified themselves with the prophet Elijah. Indeed, Adventism, which grew out of the Millerite movement, often speaks of itself as the Advent movement, and used to although I seldom hear it these days refer to ourselves as the Elijah movement. Hans K. La Rondelle, Prophetic Basis of Adventism, Adventist Review, June 1-July 20, 1989. So this blog has, as one of its main purposes, to rekindle an awareness of the Adv...

Passing the baton to a new Adventist generation. We’ve established that most young adults leave the church. Right now there are two main explanations for this exodus, and two major models for retaining them. Right now, it’s clear that the typical Adventist church has nothing to offer young adults. If we did, they’d be staying. That’s not their fault, it’s ours. October 31, 2010. Adventism’s Blind Spot. The Challenges We Face–intro. A Faith worth living. How to Pass the Baton . . . Passing the baton to a new Adventist generation. The Challenges We Face–intro. Recently, I received an inquiry concerning “how” we do this. What follows is a redacted version of that personal reply. The changes–the ‘how’– generally proposed so far cannot succeed, because they are of the nature mentioned above. A new program, series of topics, even changing the music–though it might help–will not be sufficient. Changes need to be much more comprehensive. November 13, 2009. 3 Comments ». Maybe I’m no...

In the Present Tense. March 5, 2011. What’s your story? 8212; edoutlook @ 4:54 pm. My work puts me in contact with young people on a weekly basis. Supporting Father Jay's Ministry. Helping the children of Dharmasagar, India Today, 31% of children in Dharma Sagar do not attend school because their families cannot afford it. Educational and vocational opportunities for these children are limited; the lack of these opportunities, combined with the strong Indian caste system, severely limits their ability to earn a living and support themselves and their families. Education of children is essential to the future success of this mandal (county).
