Special Ed Philosopher: Now What?
http://spedphilosopher.blogspot.com/2009/06/now-what.html
A discontented special educator bloviates about everything from "the profession" to politics. Saturday, June 13, 2009. Now that I am done my school year, I think it is a good time to pack up my blog. I am now contributing to a new blog, Liberty and Skepticism. And have started a new blog more aptly titled Education Philosopher. This new blog, I think, will focus on the more philosophical side of education, as I will write for it during my PhD study. See you all there. December 16, 2009 at 10:48 PM. 在莫非定律...

TeacherLearner: Teaching Third Grade Math
http://teacherlearner-songstress.blogspot.com/2011/02/teaching-third-grade-math.html
Reflections of a pre-service teacher. Sunday, February 13, 2011. Teaching Third Grade Math. The next part of the lesson was much better. I went over different types of arrays, and showed how you can represent the same multiplication problem with different pictures. I think this was helpful. The day before, I had also interjected the hotel building metaphor from Fosnot (Multiplication and Division) while my master teacher was teaching, and I think that was very successful! March 2, 2011 at 9:14 AM. I am p...

TeacherLearner: January 2011
http://teacherlearner-songstress.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Reflections of a pre-service teacher. Sunday, January 16, 2011. I got pretty excited reading about the rekenrek. This week. Seeing that all learning is most effective when contextualized, including mine, I made the connection this week between the Fosnot discussion of using the rekenrek. Manipulative and my own experience with Dreambox. Well, my son lost interest in the program, and despite many reminder emails from Dreambox in my inbox, we did not renew. So, like many learning ideas, even those supp...

Reflections of a pre-service teacher. Thursday, February 10, 2011. From assessment to instruction. After our initial short fiction reading session on the first day, she really couldn't give me any coherent explanation of what was happening in the fictional story of which she had just read a few paragraphs (her chosen "Just Right" text). Her fluency and comprehension were well below grade level - I placed her in a 4-5 grade level! Learning Objectives and Materials for Instruction. Your student is unique i...

TeacherLearner: Becoming, Accepting, Achieving

Reflections of a pre-service teacher. Monday, March 7, 2011. Becoming, Accepting, Achieving. Sometimes I feel like an alien. When I was a child, I used to make up Bach-like melodies to the rhythm of my ten minute walk to the bus stop. I loved the order, the smells, the colors (remember those rectangular avocado hall tiles? How do I balance his needs with those of the other students? How could I have missed this reverse favoritism? I had to talk to him later about why I didn't call on him so much. Curiose...

TeacherLearner: March 2011
http://teacherlearner-songstress.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Reflections of a pre-service teacher. Wednesday, March 16, 2011. I have wondered for a while how well I would be able to teach math, because as I said in my first Math Autobiography, I have doubts about my ability to communicate math instruction effectively. Perhaps it was because this was third grade math, and the concepts were simple, but it was no problem at all. I learned a lot, and I think they even learned something from me! What an inspiring thing! Thursday, March 10, 2011. Monday, March 7, 2011.
