Born in Kingston upon Hull in 1925, Jack Close describes growing up in the 30s, becoming a Post Office Messenger in 1940, delivering telegrams by cycle around a badly blitzed city and being bombed out in 1941. He qualified as a Wireless Operator and joined H.M. Rescue Tugs in 1943, taking part in the Invasion of Normandy in 1944, also having a close encounter. This is a real belter of a book. Once picked up, this book is very hard to put down. An informative and fascinating read. The Yorkshire Dalesma.

Captain John Cloudsley-Thompson, who joined the Fellowship in 1986, served as a troop leader in the 4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) during the battle of Normandy.
