Maxwell's House: The Rich and the Poor ::: John Maxwell ::: Jamaican Journalist & Columnist

http://www.johnmaxwellshouse-2002.blogspot.com/2002/02/rich-and-poor.html

The Rich and the Poor. There are two huge international conferences taking place this week: one, in New York is called the World Economic Forum and is attended by most of the richest and most powerful men in the world. There may, actually, be some women at this conference, but most of them are somebody's aide or spokesperson. One of the speakers at the WEF meeting was Mr Paul O'Neill, US secretary of the treasury who warned poor nations of the dangers of debt. He should know, since he is the former h...

AN American journalist, Jerry Mildon, says that the toughest challenge in defending the Central Intelligence Agency is that bad as its failures have been, its successes have often been worse. I was reminded of that by the killing last week of Jonas Savimbi, for 26 years, America's Man In Angola. Between those two, Mobutu and Savimbi, the cause of African unity and development was almost, but not entirely, derailed. Jonas Savimbi was the grandson of a chief of the Ovimbundo, the largest nation in Angola, ...

Maxwell's House: Beset by Eddie Seaga, Betrayed by Mutty Perkins ::: John Maxwell ::: Jamaican Journalist & Columnist

Beset by Eddie Seaga, Betrayed by Mutty Perkins. DESMOND ALLEN Interviews John Maxwell. When the PNP won the 1959 general elections by a landslide, Maxwell felt that his own analysis had held true over Seaga's. "He has never forgiven me for those two articles," Maxwell firmly believes. But this was child's play, compared with what was to come 13 years later when he would face an unconquerable Seaga in a bruising electoral battle for the fearsome West Kingston constituency. The courage of Peter Abrahams.

Maxwell's House: The Battle of Hope Gardens ::: John Maxwell ::: Jamaican Journalist & Columnist

http://johnmaxwellshouse-1999.blogspot.com/2006/02/battle-of-hope-gardens.html

The Battle of Hope Gardens. Hope Gardens is a very desirable address. Perhaps, after King’s House, Jamaica House and Vale Royal, it must be the most desirable address in all Jamaica. It has been so desirable that for many years, government departments have muscled their way into the gardens, simply by redefining Hope Gardens to their own purposes. They have redefined the gardens to a small sliver of land of about 30 acres - half the size it was in the seventies and a fraction of its true extent. Fast for...

Maxwell's House: September 2005 ::: John Maxwell ::: Jamaican Journalist & Columnist

http://johnmaxwellshouse-2005.blogspot.com/2005_09_01_archive.html

Many, many years ago, when I was a teenager at high school, the local cinema mogul would once or twice a term lend the school a projector and a feature film which had been shown everywhere else. This time the projector worked but the sound didn't. The film was "Whispering Smith", a western epic, starring Alan ladd, then at the height of his stardom, a tough, no-nonsense cowboy. I began to laugh and my fellows, to whom Alan Ladd was a genuine hero, looked at me quizzically. The Cubans do it better. In the...

Can Freedom Wear Jackboots? Elie Weisel, a survivor of the Nazi Holocaust against the Jews, said eloquently: "In those times, those who were in the death camps felt not only tortured and murdered by the enemy, but also tortured and murdered by what they considered to be the world's silence and indifference.". The world is remembering Auschwitz and the Holocaust. It is not paying any notice to the 200-year Holocaust still under way in Haiti. At the UN Holocaust commemoration, Archbishop Cilistino Migliore...

Even the notoriously noncommittal Kofi Annan must have been surprised when a journalist questioned his credentials for refereeing the current Mideast free-for-all. At a press conference in Rome after the failed Middle East peacekeeping talks, an English-speaking journalist drove hard at Mr Annan. Didn't the UN secretary-general think that his condemnation of Israel for deliberately bombing the UN position undermined his qualifications to be an honest broker in the conflict? Israel's frustration is showing.

Our Debt is Long Past Due. The Caribbean has now proven that it is even more hopeless at diplomacy than it is at cricket. And, as in cricket, those who are considered guilty are not those at the top but the foot-soldiers. Our gutless leaders - unable to look a principle in the face - are, as I write on Friday, busy selling the Haitian people down the river. . .again. Condoleezza Rice has apparently threatened Jamaica directly, telling Patterson to get rid of Aristide or face unspecified consequences.

At least one of my readers is under the misapprehension that last week I was praising the Government's human rights record. I was doing no such thing. When I reported Mr Nicholson's claims it was because I thought that most of us would have been vividly aware of the truth: when it comes to human rights, this Government is nowhere to be found. While Mr Nicholson boldly spoke about the Government's adherence to the Protocol on Fundamental Rights and Freedoms (part of the Universal Declaration of Human Righ...

In the Twinkling of an Eye. It was there one minute and gone the next, like something seen out of the corner of your eye which disappears as you turn to give it your full attention. Fortunately, I had saved it to my hard disk and I could retrieve it. My mind was not playing tricks. The story was frightening, as the headline suggests: 'HIV rate for blacks has doubled in 10 years'. It's incredibly disappointing,' " said Terje Anderson, the director of the National Association of People With AIDS. 'We j...

In Whom We Trust. AS you might imagine, I receive a daily flood of e-mail and, as is now usual, much of it is the detritus of the consumer society, the endless solicitations to improve my virility, 'interact' with wild, wild, women, accept a percentage for lending my bank account for temporarily parking millions stolen from poor people all over the world. I have learned to take them in my stride, although I did get an apology from one Israeli website, which had been used to attack my computer. I have...

The Divine Right of Certain 'Ginnigogs'. About 35 years ago, having returned to Jamaica after my five-year exile in Britain, I was struck by a particularly poignant story. It had happened on the other side of the block of buildings where I used to work for the BBC, at India House, in Holborn behind Bush House in the Strand. Immediately after having been acquitted of murder in the Kingston Circuit Court on Tuesday, Senior Superintendent of Police Mr Reneto deCordova (etc) Adams delivered himself of a few ...

Laughing Water and the Uglificators. Uglification is an ugly word, and uglificator is even uglier, which is why I just invented it, to describe those who would destroy the Cockpit Country for a couple of hundred million American dollars. Today, at the head of what used to be the cataract, you can still gather watercress, but I wouldn't do that now. E Coli pollution from unplanned human settlements make it a little too dangerous. The Jamaica Public Service Company destroyed the Maggoty Falls to eke out an...
