Thursday, May 31, 2012. Today I hiked through old coal mining country. In the 1850's there were several villages along where the trail passes now. All you can see now are open pits in the ground and a little coal around. At one point during the day I stopped for some trail magic and while eating a doughnut I saw a groundhog up in a Mulberry tree. Sunday, July 29, 2012. Down to 2 Digits. I ended up hiking 12 miles yesterday passing by Little Wilson Falls. The picture does not begin to capture its size and beauty. At the end of the day I camped by an abandoned suspension bridge over Thompson Brook. It was once used for AT traffic but not now. Now you ford the brook below it. There was another ford first thing this morning. The rocks were slick as egg whites. Hopefully I can make some more miles today. It looks pretty up and down on the map.

Saturday, July 28, 2012. I started The 100 Mile Wilderness this morning after a little bit of wildness in the hostel where I spent the night. One of the neighbors has chickens and one of the hens was out of its coop and entered the open door of the hostel. It was making its way upstairs when I saw it. Once on the trail we encountered a detour around a newly built beaver pond. And a warning sign about the 100 Mile Wilderness. So far there have been ponds every couple miles and dense timber all around.

Monday, April 30, 2012. Saturday, April 28, 2012. Yesterday hiking out of Atkins on the west side of I-81 was probably the nicest day all around of the trip. The day before was real Rainey with flash floods around. Every thing had that newly washed look and smell. There was one place where it was required to ford a creek but the water had gone down a lot by the time I got there.
