Beginning by making medieval encaustic tiles using my carved pattern blocks, once they became confident with the material we moved onto creating designs for their own encaustic tiles. Lys Medieval tiles and my Green Man tile -. Medieval Tile designs are faithful to the originals, dating from the mid thirteenth to mid sixteenth century. I carve a pattern block from wood for each design and the stamped impression is filled with a slip inlay. Here's the bed in situ in the bedroom of the William and Mary House - I really love how it looks, even before I make and embroider the hangings! The pinkish velvet-covered mattress came with it, and looks just fine, actually - goes very well with the wallpaper, at least :). I'm using sheet styrene molded to look like clapboard, plus tiny windows and doors by Tichy Trains.
