Language, Linguistics, and Conlangs: February 2010

http://languagelinguisticsconlangs.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Language, Linguistics, and Conlangs. Saturday, February 27, 2010. Etymology: "Bride" and "Groom". Originally I planned to do this twice a week, but with my busy schedule, I think once a week on Saturday is going to be it for me. At least for now. Today we will examine the origin of the words bride. Dates from 1604, and is a shortened form of bridegroom. Bridegroom comes to us via Old English brydguma. Meaning "suitor" and is a compound of the words bryd. Bride", and guma. Is the ancestor of the word bride.

Language, Linguistics, and Conlangs. Thursday, March 25, 2010. Delays and a Busy Person. Well, I guess I should scrap any ideas of having a regular schedule for this blog. Unfortunately, due to my busy schedule, the follow-up to my last posting has been delayed. I'll try to post it this weekend, but I can't promise that. So from now on, all posts in this blog will be on a "when-I-can-do-it" schedule. Wednesday, March 17, 2010. Ever wondered where the word "yea" in the phrase "it was yea high" came from?

Language, Linguistics, and Conlangs. Thursday, February 24, 2011. The Contraction Everyone Loves to Hate. I'm talking about that much maligned English contraction ain't. I'm sure you've often heard "'ain't' isn't a word" or some variation of this phrase, often using ain't. Well, today I'll be talking a bit about this word and touch on prescriptivist grammar in general as well. With normal sound changes morphing it from am't. Amongst others. What may be most surprising for most people is that ain't. Means...

Language, Linguistics, and Conlangs: Penalize and Similar Words

http://languagelinguisticsconlangs.blogspot.com/2011/02/penalize-and-similar-words.html

Language, Linguistics, and Conlangs. Friday, February 18, 2011. Penalize and Similar Words. School and work have kept me from this and Parks and Wreckreation for so long, but now I am finally going to update something.at least once. Anyhoo, today when coming home from an interview, I started wondering about the relationship between the words penal, penalty, and other related words (yes, I really do wonder about random things like that). So, I decided to do some research and share it. From the base *kwei.

MAKING LANGUAGE CONNECTIONS THROUGH LINGUISTICS. How to avoid misspelling commonly misspelt words. February 22, 2010. While phonics is often thought to be THE solution to spelling well, going by how a word sounds isn’t sufficient most of the time, especially homophones and similar sounding syllables abound in the English language. Paying attention to how the word. Hang on, that looks wrong…. Take note of the meaning of the word. And its word class. Not moving, or not changing. 8216; for p e. Ncil and p e.

Language, Linguistics and Lore | by Julia C. Kupper

Language, Linguistics and Lore. By Julia C. Kupper. January 8, 2014. Features of Australian English. Having had the pleasure to be surrounded by many Australians in recent years, I have decided to dedicate my newest blog post to Australian English, hereafter abbreviated to AusE. It can be assumed that the basis of the Australian vocabulary was built upon words and terms spoken in Britain by the time when the land was settled, which explains why speakers of AusE use the word footpath. Nonetheless, this do...
