The Model Railroader's Notebook: April 2015

Monday, April 27, 2015. Sketching a Portable On30 Layout. We know that the 10.5" radius, while not optimum in On30, it is usable. Now we need to start designing a layout that will fit in my workshop. My daughter wants me to build a swamp layout again, which would be easy since I have most of the equipment and molds available. Taylor helped me design a very simple layout. While the track plan is quite simple, the scenery effects will be complicated and make it very viewable. Scott G. Perry. The girls mark...

Sunday, December 30, 2012. Air Brush Spray Paint Booths - Part 2. I always enjoy going to see Thayne. We had lunch together and toured his layout. He's made a lot of progress! I'm going over there with the photo lights and will take some pictures soon. Thayne has an incredible spray booth that he built himself. Here are the photos:. I didn't measure it but the booth is more than two feet wide. Thayne has his brushes mounted on the top left, as well as his pressure control and trap system. The filter is e...

The Model Railroader's Notebook: 001 Franke Furniture & Coffin Shop Kit - Getting Started

Tuesday, April 14, 2015. 001 Franke Furniture and Coffin Shop Kit - Getting Started. Train shows aren't much fun for me in Utah because there is virtually no On30 products on the tables. Occasionally I find an O scale item that I can use. Recently I saw this laser kit from Wild West Scale Model Builders at http:/ www.wildwestmodels.com/. The kit that I chose was the Franke Furniture and Coffin Shop, which you can see here http:/ www.wildwestmodels.com/products/franke-furniture.html. The next thing I do i...

The Model Railroader's Notebook: 002 Mammoth Cave RR - Cutting Wood With Blaine Holbrook
http://modelrailroadersnotebook.blogspot.com/2015/07/cutting-wood-with-blaine-holbrook.html
Tuesday, July 7, 2015. 002 Mammoth Cave RR - Cutting Wood With Blaine Holbrook. I'm working on my new On30 portable layout, and I decided that since I can't get Luaan Plywood here in Utah, that I'd just make it out of standard plywood. My friend Blaine is a member of the local NMRA here in Salt Lake. He volunteered to help me saw the lumber. What I didn't know was that he has an amazing wood shop and is a master carpenter! Thanks for the loan of your saw, Blaine! Scott G. Perry. Thanks for your comment!

Saturday, November 30, 2013. 063 The Augusta Railway - Windows and Doors. A box came in the post today. Yippee! My Grandt Line windows and doors arrived today from Caboose Hobbies. I'll never forget going there for the first time and marking it off my bucket list. A model train store (no race cars or planes) and they have grocery carts. Not kidding! The box was very heavy duty for just plastic parts, and packed nicely with peanuts and an invoice. No damage on this one, for sure. Work time. Not always...

Friday, January 31, 2014. 101 The Navajo Mining Railway - Depot Shakes Part III. Still working on the roof tonight.let's finish one side. We continue with the same pattern. I'm careful to stop once in a while and look at the roof from a distance to see if I'm in alignment. More glue! Shake, shake, shake.Senora.shake your roofy line. I'm listening to a tv show on Mars. Very interesting. I like documentaries when I'm working on things that require a lot of attention, but can be boring. Oh, I like that!

Thursday, January 31, 2013. 020 - Richlawn RR v2 - A Diet Plan for Richlawn. Well, it seems my friend Rick is not all mirth.in fact, he's girth. Lots of girth. He asked me to design a layout around his needs. Turns out the needs are pizza and beer. Actually he needs to use the layout as an office. What better place to work? We discussed possibly making the aisles a bit larger. I didn't think it would cost him to much operationally or scenickly. But let's give it a try. Six inches of reduction, and no tra...
