Looking at life from the seat of a bicycle
June | 2016 | Pedaling Perspectives
https://pedalingperspectives.wordpress.com/2016/06
Looking at life from the seat of a bicycle. Dinner on the Road. June 13, 2016. Dinner is a slowly evolving single pot meal. It began as rice and lentils. Originally red lentils. The red lentils would cook down enough that they dissolved into a pot of rice creating a nice thick meal. This soon grew old. We started adding bouillon for a little more flavor. Beef or chicken. Whatever we had. This too, soon grew old. Photo by Elizabeth Ellis. Additional variations include cracking two eggs into the mother whe...

Looking at life from the seat of a bicycle. La Comida de Colombia. April 27, 2016. April 28, 2016. As a cyclist, I’m always looking to pack on calories. One way to do that is to continuously search out new foods to try. Colombia sticks out for its fruit. There are endless types here that I have never heard of. Guanábana, Tomate de Arbol, Lulo, Pitaya, Granadilla, and Maracuyá to name a few. Granadilla by Elizabeth Ellis. Lulo by Elizabeth Ellis. Pinuele from the Paramo. Piña by Elizabeth Ellis. All are s...
Through the Lagunas to Chile | Pedaling Perspectives
https://pedalingperspectives.wordpress.com/2016/12/19/through-the-lagunas-to-chile
Looking at life from the seat of a bicycle. Through the Lagunas to Chile. December 19, 2016. We leave Uyuni early. It’s not hard to do. With a choice between a reportedly washboard, sandy old railroad track and the International Highway, we choose the later. It’s dirt, but has no loose sand and no washboard. The kilometers click by. I see the mountains in the distance and aim for them. With a whole day of riding, we make it to Alota. Tyndall spots a group of suri. The wind wakes me up in the night. I...

Looking at life from the seat of a bicycle. January 10, 2017. The treelined streets of Mendoza are a pleasure to ride. It’s New Year’s Day and we have the place to ourselves. Old cars are parked in front of modern houses. After noon a handful of small shops start to open. We fill our bags with empanadas and cold drinks, taking it all to the park for a picnic. I see a coyote and watch birds flit about. After lunch the wind kicks up, mostly aiding our southerly progress. Butterflies get tossed abou...The w...
Argentina for Christmas | Pedaling Perspectives

Looking at life from the seat of a bicycle. December 30, 2016. Hostel Sonchek in San Pedro is comfortable. Two nights turns to four. Birds chirp in the mornings. Trees shade a back patio. Kittens roam around, getting up to no good and providing hours of entertainment. Empanadas can be had next door for a few pesos. We work hard to convince ourselves to leave, to go back out in to the desert. At Valle Jere in Tocanao we sit in the shade and watch the local dog pack romp in the water. In the morning we was...

2016 -> 2017. – to the nth degree: every day's an adventure.
https://helenakotala.com/2017/01/02/2016-2017
To the nth degree: every day's an adventure. Home: Huntingdon County, PA. I rode my bike more than ever. I completed my first solo century ride. And my first mountain bike race. In a long time. I have seen a lot of progress in my strength, endurance, and technical ability. I rode in a lot of new places, with new people. I am no longer as scared to ride with people I don’t know for fear of being too slow. Surprise snowfall in Shingletown Gap. I finally conquered my fear of rock climbing. My relationship w...

To the nth degree: every day's an adventure. Home: Huntingdon County, PA. Adventure: It’s what you make it. I think today more than ever, it’s easy to get caught up in the belief that our own lives are mundane. The internet constantly throws articles about traveling to far-off lands in our faces. Instagram makes it easier than ever to see a lot of beautiful people doing amazing things. Every single day, our news feeds are … Continue reading Adventure: It’s what you make it. March 15, 2017. To the nth degree: every day's an adventure. Home: Huntingdon County, PA. The Cabin—Part 1: Beginnings. Yesterday marked the ceremonial end of an era, in a sense. Though in actuality it was an era that ended several months ago, when we moved from the tiny cabin where we had been living for about a year to the full-size house that we currently call home. But yesterday afternoon, we prepared the cabin … Continue reading The Cabin—Part 1: Beginnings. January 5, 2015. August 7, 2015. March 10, 2014. View hel...

Posted by Pedalling Slow. December 5, 2016. December 14, 2016. Also upon arriving in Achupallas, I admittedly don’t have much juice left in the tank to hike-a-bike the Inca Trail. Soggy Ecuador has totally beaten me to a pulp. My mojo is super low and the only way to rejuvenate this old-ish fart(as Dang would always remind me) is good coffee and a bit of good beer which I luckily found in charming Cuenca. What’s the story morning glory…. Some me time for this one. Fine stone-masonry of olden days. Finall...

Group of four: Salento – Ibague. Posted by Pedalling Slow. June 17, 2016. July 27, 2016. There’s actually a dirt route connecting Salento to Ibague. I admit to play some sleight of hands when I asked them to come along with us and then mentioning it’ll be some dirt road fun after they agreed. The two, Raimon and Bernardo, gamely said yes nonetheless. So we live to ride dirt another day once and for all and this time as a group of four. And the on and off fog to cool it off on the climb. Although his bike...

Desert Solitaire: Ibague to San Agustin. Posted by Pedalling Slow. July 19, 2016. July 28, 2016. We left Ibague minus Raimon as he needs to double back to Bogota. We all hope he may still catch up anyway. I can’t believe I’m writing about Colombia while planning how to cross from Ecuador to Peru now. Apologies folks for being lazy posting some updates. Bernardo basking in the heat. Scene from our room. Dang trying to cool-off the heat of the day. With some tunnels to break that mountain view monotony.
Adios bad coffee! Manizales to Salento – Powered by Adobo

Posted by Pedalling Slow. May 29, 2016. July 28, 2016. We’re now smack in the middle of. The heart of Colombia’s Coffee zone. I can’t figure out though why I’m having a hard time finding good coffee. Are the Colombians drinking the good stuff in their secret room away from unsuspecting. Well no matter, as I can drink tea nowadays or as we recently discovered, Aromatica de Fruta, Colombia’s version of fruit tea. Getting ready ride to Salento after a brief stay in Manizales to dry out the gears. In Salento...

Avenue of the Volcanoes: Latacunga to Cajabamba. Posted by Pedalling Slow. December 4, 2016. December 5, 2016. We set our bearings west on Quilatoa, a popular place amongst travelers. It got ridiculously windy all of a sudden and dark clouds were hanging low as we get closer to the rim. My hands got numb quickly from the ferocious headwind that seems to bar us from moving forward. It caught me by surprise. Next thing I know I’m pushing my bike and thinking “What the hell? We still vaguely follow the Tran...

Pedaling Paul | My pedaling 'related' adventures.
My pedaling 'related' adventures. November 25, 2013. November 25, 2013. Winter months at the bike shop can be rather slow. Considering only the serious ones stick around to ride all year long, and depending on the weather, it starts getting slow around this time of year. Time waisted is time well spent. Enjoy a video of I have no idea what we’re doing. #trickz #kidsbikes. Http:/ distilleryvesper7-15.ak.instagram.com/a02af26c554111e397bc0e14876914ea 101.mp4. November 25, 2013. 8220;invisible” helmet.

Bristol to Perpignan
Friday, 13 January 2017. The Mother of Invention. When I come to NZ, and especially to the South Island, I always feel I have stepped back in time. So far, although plenty of the local bars (The Thirsty Pig, Toot 'n Whistle etc) are playing music, the most recent thing I have heard so far is the original version of Hard Days Night! Also the addiction to phonetic spelling appears to have been taken to extremes - I don't suppose Phoebe Archer (currently at Oxford) has her tutors spelling her name 'Feebee'.

Pedaling Perspectives | Looking at life from the seat of a bicycle
Looking at life from the seat of a bicycle. Paso Vargara to Chile. January 10, 2017. The Municipal Campground in Malargüe is quieter than anticipated. What I didn’t anticipate is the 31st annual Festival de Chivo happening while we were in town. The campground residents are quiet, but the music blasts next door. We compromise, and I fall asleep with a puppy pile by my head. They stay there all night. The road in the morning is covered in goat tracks. We follow them up into the mountains. I watch the clou...
