Patrick and Colin's Bee Blog: July 2010

Patrick and Colin's Bee Blog. The adventures of two novice beekeepers in Cambridge, England. Sunday, 25 July 2010. Bees in the Backyard. There's been a bit of a turnaround in our fortunes since my last post (thanks - again - to Steve and Margot). During late May and early June their back garden seemed to be a favoured landing spot for bee swarms, with one or two turning up every day. And at the end of these prolonged exertions we left with our second complete colony. On this occasion, we brought it home ...

Patrick and Colin's Bee Blog. The adventures of two novice beekeepers in Cambridge, England. Monday, 13 July 2009. There are some things in life that are definitely worth waiting for - and keeping your own colony of bees is one of them. Our beekeeping plans began back in 2006 (or at least they did for Colin, who did a beginners course, went to lots of beekeepers 'meets' and did quite a bit of reading too). That it's intensified our interest even further. Has finally brought some funds (from an increasing...

Patrick and Colin's Bee Blog. The adventures of two novice beekeepers in Cambridge, England. Wednesday, 4 August 2010. New Life in the Nuke? This is a picture of what we found when we inspected the nuke (the small hive) at the weekend. There are clearly some larvae and the bees are obscuring a couple of cells with eggs in them. As we know from our experiences over the winter, worker bees will start to lay eggs if they realise there's no queen in the hive. Unfortunately these are unfertilised eggs, wh...

Patrick and Colin's Bee Blog: December 2009

http://pcbees.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Patrick and Colin's Bee Blog. The adventures of two novice beekeepers in Cambridge, England. Friday, 25 December 2009. Snow place like home. A quick trip up to the hives to see how they've fared during the recent snow falls. The main concern - at least for the hive without the mesh floor - is that the entrance will have become obstructed by snow, thus blocking the flow of air into the hive. Despite the sun, the outside temperature remains decidedly chilly, thus ensuring that they a. Ll remain inside....

Patrick and Colin's Bee Blog. The adventures of two novice beekeepers in Cambridge, England. Monday, 5 October 2009. In keeping with our nation's increasing obsession with 'health and safety', we are now able to offer our bees a choice of 'Smoking' and 'Non-smoking' hives! Most beekeepers ' sm. Their hives prior to inspection in order to calm them down (or, more accurately, reduce their aggression). Wild and free in forests (obviously before humans came along and stuck their oar in). Thankfully they have...

In 2002 the Shropshire Barn Owl Group estimated the population at 121 to 140 pairs, a decline of nearly 50%. The national population of barn owls has declined from 12000 to 4000 pairs. Monday, 10 August 2015. Scilly pelagic no 5 - The late Great Shear Show! Another great evening on Sapphire, predictably unpredictable and whilst we remained Wilson's-less, there was plenty of excitement in store as the evening wore on and scent of chum brought the tubenoses in! The first brief encounter was with a Sooty Shearwate. And the first of the usual glut of Stormies. Then almost immediately, the star performer of the evening was Great Shearwate.
