The Rampant Mandolin: Music from the nifty (17)50s
http://rampantmandolin.blogspot.com/2016/05/music-from-nifty-1750s.html
Celtic Music of the 18th Century. Monday, May 23, 2016. Music from the nifty (17)50s. I play a mandolin built for Celtic music, a hybrid of the mandolin and the cittern of the 18th century. It is pear shaped with a flat back, whereas the original mandolin, the Neapolitan, is more almond shaped with a rounded back. So as I practice the sonatas of Gervasio, a concerto by Domenico Caudioso and exercises from the method book by Denis I’m considering adopting my own name to accompany the music. Perh...May 1: ...

The Rampant Mandolin: November 2014
http://rampantmandolin.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Celtic Music of the 18th Century. Wednesday, November 19, 2014. All play and no work makes John a dull musician. I estimate a ratio of 10 to 1 regarding practicing versus public performance: 10 hours of practice for one hour of playing, and that may be generous on the public performance side. Too much “playing” and not enough practicing, and my technique deteriorates alarmingly. It was interesting to find that concept confirmed in a book about introverts. My accidental new guitar. Published June 2, 2011.

The Rampant Mandolin: August 2014
http://rampantmandolin.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Celtic Music of the 18th Century. Thursday, August 14, 2014. Ken Burns and the top hit of 1990. Wednesday, August 6, 2014. My mother’s heart attack in 2004 helped me to compose a new tune, one inspired by the annoying beeping of a machine in her room. Suffering is said to lead to art, although in this case she did the suffering and I created the art, but was it creativity or simply following the rules of mathematics in music? Celtic Music of the 18th Century. Sunday, July 13, 2014. It's not easy to define the music I play; it's not a quick answer. The Rampant Mandolin: The 18th-century Mandolin
http://rampantmandolin.blogspot.com/2016/05/the-18th-century-mandolin.html
Celtic Music of the 18th Century. Monday, May 16, 2016. The Neapolitan Mandolin enjoyed great popularity in the 18th century. A Neapolitan distinct style of music developed in the early 1700s, a lighter and more melodic sound. The mandolin was not taken seriously in Naples and was considered an instrument of the common street musician. A school of players and composers grew up in Naples but was never accepted into the conservatories. The most important center of mandolin activity in the second ha...Pietr...
