Cultivating Learning: Activities for all Seasons. Saturday, 27 September 2014. Beautiful Things - Apple Cider and Pumpkin Pie. My favourite time of year! Seasonal foods may be new to some of the learners in your classes. Build in cultural experiences by bringing in culinary favourites for this time of year. Be sure to ask about allergies, and be aware of dietary restrictions around lard as it is often in pie crusts. Build from what the learners know, and expand vocabulary. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

http://cultivatinglearning.blogspot.com/2014/07/outdoor-things-to-do-in-summer.html
Cultivating Learning: Activities for all Seasons. Sunday, 13 July 2014. Outdoor Things to Do in the Summer. When schools are out in the summer, individuals and families often seek fun things to do. Outdoor activities may differ in different parts of the world. What do boys and girls usually do in the summer? What do adults do? One idea is to make a big class list and check off who has done what, and who will do what. I have done 33 things on this list. How about you? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Cultivating Learning: Activities for all Seasons: March 2014
http://cultivatinglearning.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Cultivating Learning: Activities for all Seasons. Monday, 31 March 2014. Winter time can be a difficult time to find good quality and cheap fresh fruits and vegetables. In my class a few weeks ago, we had some visitors from a local "eat healthy" group demonstrate how to make a delicious salad with us. They brought all the ingredients, and we provided the bowls, forks, and appetites :). Our guest speakers brought this recipe. I do not know the source. Our final item: compost! Follow-up: Our community offe...

Every two months, I like to assess what content and activities my students want to stop, continue and start. One way I do this is a "dotmocracy". I gave each student five stickers. They had to choose the five most important things for them right now. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Needs Assessment Tool: Dotmocracy. Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks. The Joy of ESL Blog: Addressing PBLA Challenges
http://joyofesl.blogspot.com/2016/11/addressing-pbla-challenges.html
Return to my website. Sunday, November 27, 2016. I've just returned from attending one day of the TESL Ontario Conference where I made new friends, saw old friends, gained knowledge, handed out a few of my cool new MOO cards, and did A LOT of listening, thinking, listening, some talking, and more listening to others' questions and concerns regarding the roll-out of Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA). Kelly with John Sivell. Will there be studies on ROI? Here are a few areas of difficulty that I w...

The Joy of ESL Blog: September 2016
http://joyofesl.blogspot.com/2016_09_01_archive.html
Return to my website. Sunday, September 25, 2016. PBLA with Literacy Learners. Do you teach at a school that uses Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA)? At my school, we have been ramping up for it for quite some time. We've had lots of training, have attended workshops and webinars, and have implemented many parts of PBLA to some extent. But this winter we are expected to have it all up and running. It is both exciting and overwhelming! To use graphics of a growing seedling to represent the concept...

With PBLA upon us, there has never been a better time for us to reach out to one another and lend a helping hand. I believe that in or...

The Joy of ESL Blog: December 2016
http://joyofesl.blogspot.com/2016_12_01_archive.html
Return to my website. Saturday, December 24, 2016. See You Next Week! Sunday, December 18, 2016. My teaching practice is changing. It started when my workplace was able recently to add several more literacy classrooms and teachers. I am no longer responsible for meeting the needs of foundations and CLB 1L learners in the same class. That's a good thing. On hearing of Maria's success with this, I have decided to experiment with colouring and other creative activities in my own class. I am starting mos...
