Pick a Cheek: July 2013
http://pickacheek.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Tuesday, July 9, 2013. Today I did our travel team's version of the Filthy Fifty they used as a fitness measure for their tryouts and ongoing as a friendly competition between teammates. In twenty minutes I did:. And then I went downstairs to my basement where my washer and dryer are to do as much laundry as possible. Because I know my legs are going to seize up tomorrow. And I won't be able to get up and down those stairs for a few days. I need to be practical. I've had experience with this. You really ...

Pick a Cheek: action items
http://pickacheek.blogspot.com/2012/08/action-items.html
Tuesday, August 7, 2012. I find derby hard. I am not a natural skater. It is a lot of work for me, physically and mentally. I am not a natural athlete. I don't think of my body very much and prefer to keep my mileage low. Given time on my own, I will crawl into a ball and use only my arms to hold a book. Well, maybe the occasional walk to the kitchen to make more tea. So, despite this derby thing being terrifically difficult, I think I'm doing pretty good. Difficult is do-able. My birthday, bless it, pas...

Pick a Cheek: first scrimmage
http://pickacheek.blogspot.com/2012/02/first-scrimmage.html
Monday, February 27, 2012. Tomorrow our newly benchmarked players will be playing in the Minty Fresh rookie scrimmage. First time playing. I remember my first scrimmage. It was a little bit epic. For me anyway. At least these rookies won't have the national media there filming them (and scratching the piss out their backs while they flail and fall). At least I hope not. I can't promise anything. Photo by Anthony Canada. When you are playing. But when it encounters a situation where it has no training or ...

Pick a Cheek: The Mouthguard Years
http://pickacheek.blogspot.com/2011/07/mouthguard-years.html
Wednesday, July 20, 2011. There's this unfortunate photo. On Facebook. It was taken in a hotel hallway, sometime between the after party and the after after party. The five of us in the photo, 1200 kilometers from home, are looking decidedly less than fresh. I love this picture. But, no, I'm going to show it to you. Because it will be all random photos of people they used to know. Then it's just derby, derby, derby. Roller derby, as often remarked, has a tendency to hijack your entire life. Is the fuzzy ...

Pick a Cheek: July 2012
http://pickacheek.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, July 29, 2012. There is a difference between knowing better and doing better. Monday, July 23, 2012. Why I'm a bad blogger and 9 super points of wisdom. But, I'm busy, you know? With derby. Which is why I can't write about derby, because I'm too busy making derby happen. That involves way. My derby crush has turned out to be a keeper and we've set up house. Thus, to gain some closure on and finally bid adieu to my minty fresh derby self as I finally admit I am no longer a blushing novice, I shall...

Pick a Cheek: August 2012
http://pickacheek.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Monday, August 13, 2012. In my ongoing effort to improve my nutritional status so I can be the bestest roller derby-er I can be, despite my stunning lack. Paleo has caught my eye because I know a half dozen people personally who have claimed that paleo eating and lifestyle has changed their lives. And I've seen them undergo changes, becoming healthier, fitter and happier. Paleo is like the magical unicorn of diets. And spend a few weeks re-learning how to eat. Good bye (*sob*) toast. It occurred to me th...

Pick a Cheek: RollerGirl Boom wheel review by Princess Sticky Skates
http://pickacheek.blogspot.com/2012/03/rollergirl-boom-wheel-review-by.html
Friday, March 23, 2012. RollerGirl Boom wheel review by Princess Sticky Skates. S new Boom wheels. That are advertised to be narrowest, grippiest, lightest wheels. I can tell you that they certainly are light but that's about all I can say since they went directly on the girl child's skates without even a test run for mama. I do love my new skates but ow ow ow breaking in speed boots! He wasn't very good but he was sure going fast! After two years of wear, are just starting to fit her feet but the wheels...

Pick a Cheek: derby orphans
http://pickacheek.blogspot.com/2011/09/derby-orphans.html
Tuesday, September 6, 2011. Last week, I was sitting at the dining room table of the most indomitable Stitch Rip-Her. Along with jammer killa Lacee Long Stalkin'. Having a bit of derby meeting and chit chat, while Stitch's four year old son and my boy played around us. Lacee, as much as she'd like to think of it as being out of character (though it's not so much while we're allowed to call her 'Lacee'), dropped the F-bomb. Don't let that scare you. I have a normalish family. Leave it To Beaver. But I do ...
