The Westmorland Flyer

Diary of a Sportcruiser kit aircraft builder and flyer. Saturday, 13 April 2013. April is annual time for G-JONL. The Permit to Fly expires on 5th May each year and so I start working on her ready for the annual inspection early in April. My Sportcruiser is three years old now and has done around 220 flying hours. For the first time there were a few minor faults that had to be sorted out in addition to the standard annual maintenance work. Still on the port side of the aircraft, the port fuel level indic...

The Westmorland Flyer: 01/11/12 - 01/12/12

http://thewestmorlandflyer.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Diary of a Sportcruiser kit aircraft builder and flyer. Friday, 30 November 2012. Why do I always seem to choose the coldest days to work on my aeroplane? Hangars are chilly places at the best of times but when the outside air temperature is minus 4°C then they are like working in a cold room! Notwithstanding the cold, it was a successful day:. I had pondered at some length how best to mount this unit and in the end I used some aluminium angle to provide a mounting perpendicular to the firewall. This...

The Westmorland Flyer: Early experiences with the new prop

http://thewestmorlandflyer.blogspot.com/2013/03/early-experiences-with-new-prop.html

Diary of a Sportcruiser kit aircraft builder and flyer. Monday, 4 March 2013. Early experiences with the new prop. I've got about ten hours of flying in the log with the new propeller and everything seems to be just fine. It actually makes the Sportcruiser a quite different aircraft in many respects, not just because it is faster. All aspects of the flight envelope are improved, from take-off run to climb rate and cruise speed, to fuel economy. The sweet spot seems to be at about 18 litres per hour and 1...

The Westmorland Flyer: Back in the air... perhaps

http://thewestmorlandflyer.blogspot.com/2013/01/back-in-air-perhaps.html

Diary of a Sportcruiser kit aircraft builder and flyer. Tuesday, 29 January 2013. Back in the air. perhaps. The revised paperwork from the LAA arrived today, so I am good to go with the new propeller. Sadly the weather is not cooperating, so I think it will be the weekend at the earliest before I can slip the surly bonds once more. Fluke 87 @ AvionTEq. 25 February 2013 at 02:03. Hey, it’s nice that your revised paperwork finally arrived. How’s your propeller doing? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

The Westmorland Flyer: 01/09/10 - 01/10/10

http://thewestmorlandflyer.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Diary of a Sportcruiser kit aircraft builder and flyer. Sunday, 19 September 2010. It's been a while. Since I updated this Blog and I have been gently taken to task for not regaling my eager readership with any anecdotes or stories of daring do. It's nice to know there's still a few of you out there! It's pleasing to be able to report that G-JONL has lived up to expectations and is proving to be a fun aircraft to fly. Obviously it's not as stable in the air as, say, the Warrior but it's still a very ...

The Westmorland Flyer: 01/10/12 - 01/11/12

http://thewestmorlandflyer.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Diary of a Sportcruiser kit aircraft builder and flyer. Tuesday, 23 October 2012. Return of the Blogger. Well over a year since I last posted anything on here. My excuse, if one is needed, is that I have been far too busy flying G-JONL. She continues to fly beautifully and hasn't needed any significant work beyond normal maintenance in the 2.5 years since she first flew. So what's changed in the last 18 months? One thing that irritated me and finally spurred me into action was the inordinate time taken t...

Stevelup's PPL Adventure. Learning to fly…. Archive for April 2011. Laquo; Stevelup's PPL Adventure home page. April 4, 2011. Today was a fantastic day. Probably the best day’s flying I have ever had. I’m utterly knackered after logging 4:50 in some pretty turbulent weather. Flew over the Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Wilmslow Crater. Landed at Sedona, took the crew car into town (free if you buy 10 gallons of fuel) and had lunch, then flew back to Henderson. I got my complex signoff, and the flight review.

Stevelup's PPL Adventure. Learning to fly…. Archive for March 2011. Laquo; Stevelup's PPL Adventure home page. Bye bye miserable, foggy Blighty. March 31, 2011. My trusty steed for today. From Lyneham to Halfpenny Green. March 14, 2011. Today I did my first trip from Lyneham without an instructor on board. It was a little bit nerve wracking to be honest but all went according to plan. Mel – as usual – was my willing victim for the trip. So, after changing frequencies a couple more times, we were on our w...

Stevelup's PPL Adventure. Learning to fly…. Archive for February 2011. Laquo; Stevelup's PPL Adventure home page. February 24, 2011. I’ve been a naughty boy… I had my first IMC lesson last week and didn’t document it with one of my usual wordy twitterings. Too much time has passed now to recall any specific details and I’ve rubbed the ATIS off my kneeboard but I’ll have a bash, and promise to do a proper job next time. So off we went on my first foray into the white stuff, and what good fun it was. Barel...

Stevelup's PPL Adventure. Learning to fly…. Posted April 1, 2011 by stevelup. First things first. Damn, it was hot! 34 degrees on the ramp and no air conditioning. Henderson Airport is spectacular and just shows what you can have when the state is paying for something and it doesn’t have to turn a profit! A fantastic terminal building, great restaurant and some lovely machinery sat on the apron. Secondly, I really don’t know what to say in the first place! I’m sure it will come to me soon! The Arrow is a...

Stevelup's PPL Adventure. Learning to fly…. Archive for July 2010. Laquo; Stevelup's PPL Adventure home page. July 24, 2010. Earlier in the week, I completed the ground school. Whilst I was doing this, Phil went through my training record and established that I was still a little short on documented examples of stalling. I also was very unhappy with my PFL and radio nav during the practice skills test the previous week. So the agenda for today was:-. The landing was OK – Roly complained all the way...

This morning the weather was pretty grotty again so we walked down to the beach…. The two chaps you see in this picture are Customs officers. Never seen them at the airport – we know why now🙂. Eventually, we decided that the best thing to do was head to the airport and see what the weather was doing elsewhere…. All looked good so off we went! Raduno 2012: Day 1.

Today’s lesson was steep turns and stalling, and great fun it was too. Lots of maps, little text for this diary entry…. Really enjoyed todays lesson – the 60 degree steep turns were very entertaining and have definitely given me an appetite for aerobatics. Two of them were ‘perfect’ as we hit our own wake with quite a thump. June 25, 2010.

Yes, I know it’s been a long time since I posted anything here! The plan was to make our first cross-channel trip as a bit of a birthday treat for myself a couple of weeks ago. A faulty battery in the aircraft coupled with thunderstorms quickly put a stop to that. As usual, I did all my planning with the fantastic SkyDemon. Once clear of the CTA, we climbed to 520...

This weekend, I did my first trip that actually had a point to it. My folks all still live in Leeds and I had promised that I would pop up to see them as soon as I was able to. The planned route was to keep to the west of Birmingham, then cut across and sneak through the gap between Leeds/Bradford and Doncaster/Sheffield. Off we went then…...
