ERIC PARREN - GUT FEELING
http://www.ericparren.net/works/gut-feeling.html
Microcinematography, the synthesis of microscopy and moving image, is a combination of two sensory expansion tools and allows for the exploration of different scales of both size and time. Gut Feeling investigates the boundaries of current microcinematography by using an advanced optical microscope and by employing building blocks of the promising field of synthetic biology as the content of an audiovisual experience. For this project, E. coli bacteria were genetically modified with bio-bricks.

Philanthropy & Social Change. This project takes the form of a science-as-process-art collaboration with artist and microbiologist Christina Agapakis. Our process art exploring new bioinformatic techniques for studying soil microbes was exhibited at the UCLA Art Science Center in 2014. A partial capture of these representations is available at http:/ dirtmap.org. Continued explorations in other media forthcoming. And the extraction of RNA from that soil in a microbiology laboratory. A series of novel vis...

Philanthropy & Social Change. Through a digital and analog exploration of the microbial life in a set of soil samples collected along the Pacific Crest Trail in California, this project takes the form of a science-as-process-art collaboration with artist and microbiologist Christina Agapakis. How do metagenomic sampling and sequencing techniques render the soil and its liveness in a particular digitized and partial way? As interdisciplinary scholars that traffic in biology, art, information science, and ...
