Music - Koninklijke Volkskunstgroep Reuzegom

Since the early years Reuzegom's folk dance group has had their own band of musicians. First only to accompany the folk dancers at rehearsals and performances. From the seventies the band started performing separately and playing at dances. For corteges and processions the group has ten whistlers and five drummers at their disposal. Reuzegom stages performances of traditional Flemish folk dances, folk music and flag waving, all in historical costume. The dances are always performed to live music. Every year we are trying to find a destination abroad to show our activities. Often this is at international festivals, but it may also be upon invitation of a friendly group that is organising some festivities for the occasion. On of the most attractive sides of the folk art experience is undoubtedly the contact with other cultures. While the world is slowly becoming one large village and globalisation is manifest everywhere, folklore lovers still have a healthy interest and much respect for the peculiarities of other regions. Whoever has sampled the nightly talks in an Irish pub or the warm hospitality of a German family knows what we are on about.

Thanks to the extensive research by the Institute for Flemish Folk Art, more than 150 traditional Flemish folk dances were noted down and published, ranging from simple community dances and more difficult "quadrilles" to really complicated figure dances.Traditional Flemish folk dances were danced at important celebrations such as weddings, house removals, springtime and the reaping of the harvest. Vendelen voor kinderen en jeugd. Nog in hetzelfde beginjaar werd gekozen om de groepsnaam in Reuzegom te veranderen om de verbondenheid met de stad Leuven te benadrukken. De melodie van het Reuzenliedje (Al die daar zegt de reus die komt) wordt nog steeds op regelmatige tijdstippen gespeeld door de beiaard van de Leuvense universiteitsbibliotheek. De dames zouden voortaan pronken met een brede hoepelrok ( /- 4 meter) in (namaak) brokaat, fluweel en zijde, en een strak jakje met lange aansluitende mouwen in dezelfde stof. Alles afgewerkt met de nodige kanten versieringen en een schattig hoedje met linten. Als attributen een bijpassend tasje, delicate handschoenen of een frivole parasol, en natuurlijk een onderrok met hoepels en een onderbroek met lange pijpen.

In het jaar 1488 verleende de Leuvense stadsmagistratuur de schuttersgilde Ste Barbelen de toelating om als liefhebbersgilde van de "Gebrokenen Pese" te mogen bestaan en aan allerhande festiviteiten deel te nemen. Zo werd de gilde van Ste Barbelen afhankelijk van de stad Leuven en niet van de hoofdgilde St. Sebastiaan zoals het toen gebruikelijk was. Vendelen voor kinderen en jeugd. Vendelen voor kinderen en jeugd. Bij vendelen beweeg je ritmisch een vlag, hiervoor is behendigheid en lenigheid nodig. Brengt naast de traditionele vendelreeksen nieuwe, eigen creaties op filmmuziek en spektakelreeksen, die door trommels worden begeleid. De vlaggen voor beginnende, jonge, vendeliers wegen zo’n 2 kilo. Naarmate je groter wordt schakel je over naar een zwaardere vlag. De zwaarste vlaggen wegen 6 kilo!
