Trevithick next built a steam road locomotive that he called, The Puffing Devil. Richard Trevithick never accomplished his goal of making an efficient working locomotive by the time he died on April 22, 1833, but he is responsible for leading the way in creating steam locomotion. Project Lead The Way - Principles Of Engineering. Monday, March 27, 2006. Engineer of the Week - William D. Coolidge. William D. Coolidge was born in 1873 in Hudson, Massachusets. He is most famous for the inventing of the ductile tungsten and the "Coolidge Tube". The ductile tungsten is still used today in the filaments of light bulbs. The "Coolidge Tube" is used in X-Ray.
