February 24, 2015. So, the latest round of the Greek debt crisis has ended in a typical European combination of delay and compromise, much as Yanis Varoufakis predicted a week ago. If the negotations were a win for Greece (feel free to disagree! How did it happen? But seems to have taken the Troika side by surprise. On the other side of the table, Schauble (at least in his public statements) was ready to push Greece out, a policy that would also have necessitated active measures to destroy the Greek econ...

Why Greek debt is a problem — Crooked Timber

Why Greek debt is a problem. July 8, 2015. Daniel wrote a post. Some months ago which has a useful point about Greek debt. Don’t think of the Greek debt burden, either in cash € terms or as a ratio to GDP. Used to impose as a quid-pro-quo for emergency loans to countries in crisis, and the massive efforts to restructure the political systems of Afghanistan and Iraq post invasion. Obviously these past efforts have mostly turned out pretty badly (perhaps you can argue some of the IMF. 070815 at 3:18 pm.

Go, for example, through the summary of comprehensive financial regulatory reform bills in President Obama’s letter to the G20 last week. Most indications are that they will seek tier one capital requirements in the range of 10-12 percent which is what Lehman had right before it failed. How would that help? More transparency...

Playing Russian Roulette with the Internet. December 14, 2012. I’ve been meaning to write something about the International Telecommunication Union negotiations in Dubai, not least because I helped out in a small way with getting the International Trade Union Confederation. And Greenpeace involved. But time and events kept rushing past, and other people did it better, particularly Jack Goldsmith’s ‘opinionated primer’. But if anyone wants to catch up, the BBC. Saturday, March 28, 2015. I visit the doctor. So last Friday Tanya took my blood pressure which was 160/85. This is apparently not good. Since her blood pressure can go up and down like a toilet seat at a party, she had an ample supply of meds and gave me one of her "bring the pressure down quick" tablets. Woke up next morning feeling much improved. Since I had not been to the doctor for a check-up. The Polyclinic waiting room was actually a hallway, freshly painted, clean and bright. Tanya was given...
