Alaskab4udie

Friday, May 27, 2011. Brian and I are about to embark on a summer off from work that has been in the works for a long time. We'll be doing as many backpacking traverses within Alaska that we can fit into one summer. I started a new blog to document our adventures. You can check it out here. This blog will be quiet for at least the summer and then I will figure out what I am going to do with it. I may retire this blog and continue posting to the new one. Links to this post. Alaskab4udie: White Mountains 100 (this is a long one)

http://www.alaskab4udie.blogspot.com/2010/03/white-mountains-100-this-is-long-one.html

Friday, March 26, 2010. White Mountains 100 (this is a long one). The White Mountains 100 race course was not familiar to most of the racers that lined up at the start on Sunday morning. Some had ridden parts of the trail, some all of it, but some of us had never been there before and none of us had ever raced it. And I didn't ride for about a week and a half. The taper became a complete period of rest. Then suddenly as the race was upon us, I got back on the bike to test out my setup and my exci...Not o...

Alaskab4udie: April 2011

http://www.alaskab4udie.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Saturday, April 2, 2011. We took off at 8 AM from the race start. blah, blah, blah. it was a beautiful morning. blah, blah, blah.there was snow in the forecast for that evening, so all of the bikers were worried. blah, blah, blah. I could talk about all of the usual BS that I write about when posting about a race, but I'm going to bypass all of that crap and get to what really happened. I drifted off for a minute and came back to reality to the sound of ppppffffffff. I don't think so. I started formu...

Alaskab4udie: The Susitna 100

http://www.alaskab4udie.blogspot.com/2011/02/susitna-100.html

Friday, February 25, 2011. As we pulled into the Point Mackenzie parking lot at 8:30 am, I wished I had listened to Brian and left Anchorage earlier. I said, "All I have to do is check in and strap my sleeping bag, frame bag and seat bag on and I'll be ready to go. A half hour will be plenty of time.". What if the trail is soft and we have to push 100 miles? What if I didn't bring enough layers or food? We turned off of Ayshire Road and suddenly I was riding on a paved road that almost had no snow on it&...

Alaskab4udie: November 2010

http://www.alaskab4udie.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, November 30, 2010. Rock and Ice. Skiing. Brian, Dwight and I headed up the Ram Valley access trail in search of some skiing. We wanted to stay close to town because we had a thing that night, but we also wanted to explore something new that was away from the crowds of Turnagain. We took a chance and lost in the snow area, but made up for that in scenery. There was this flat light over the entire Eagle River Valley, but it made for this beautiful eerie gray and white setting. Niko disliked the de...

Alaskab4udie: March 2011

http://www.alaskab4udie.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, March 12, 2011. We are back in Anchorage after 10 days in Pennsylvania eating sausage, hoagies, cheesesteaks, and pizza, drinking beer and wine with every meal, and moving between social outings with the least amount of movement possible. Brian and I felt the burn and the fat rolling over our waistlines as we rode the Middle Fork trail today, a ride of about 4 1/2 hours in which I felt like I had never even trained for a 100 mile race. Photos to come and some good news. Links to this post.

2Wheel Musings: October 2008

http://2wheelmusings.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Random thoughts of a cyclist. Tuesday, October 28, 2008. The Weight of Snow. Trin got up many times throughout the night to the sound of footsteps all around the house. The sound of slamming doors was disconcerting, for him anyway, I slept through most of it. I stood on our back porch listening to the thunder of trees breaking followed by the waterfall of snow pounding the ground leaving a cloud of white mist to settle. Every hour or so we check out the latest crash to see what tree nearly missed our hou...

Hark! Is that cyclocross around the corner? | Akmoots's Blog

Is that cyclocross around the corner? August 26, 2009 at 10:20 pm · Filed under Uncategorized. After a week of stewing and bitching, I’m finally (mostly) over the quagmire that was the Tour of Anchorage. Don’t get me wrong, it was a resounding success as far as stage wins goes (four out of five); but the team placed all its eggs in my basket and I dropped it. I really hate letting people down. Lots of crazy shit happened that weekend: shredded wheel. Don’t harsh my mellow. Is that cyclocross around the c...

September 1, 2009 at 10:45 pm · Filed under Uncategorized. Along with the changing of the leaves, comes the beginning of another ‘cross season. If you’re around APU Wednesday at 6:30 (September 2nd), be sure to check out the Cyclocross Clinic. At the Moseley Sports Center. It’s a great way to learn the rudimentary cyclocross skills like dismounting, mounting, barriers, etc. And best of all, it’s free! I’m hoping to learn how to do this:. But knowing me, I’ll more than likely do this:. 2 Comments ». You a...

Knock, knock…. September 10, 2009 at 9:31 pm · Filed under Uncategorized. The first ‘cross race is coming up! I’m nowhere near ready for it. In fact, my only goal is to not get lapped…twice. You see, while I do ok on the road and trail, the short efforts don’t suit me very much. I’ll just go out there and try to hang on, I guess. Here’s the course map, which is really just a suggestion:. I might have results and pictures up this weekend, depending on how long it’ll take to clean the bike. Kinley’s-...

To relocation services, as I am representing a company that helps foreign oil executives settle into Anchorage for their year or two here. So I’m learning a lot about newbies and enjoying meeting a new set of friends. There are also several lakes within the area, and birds, loons, etc.are there to welcome you. May 3, 2012.
