Saturday, 12 October 2013. Terryland Forest Park survey 17th August 2013. Numbers way down on previous visits to the transect. Could be signal to the impending season ahead. 41 bumblebees; Butterflies 2 Green-vein White; 5 Speckled Wood; 2 Meadow Brown; 1 Peacock. 1 Common Darter. I did notice about 5 bumblebees dead on the flowers they were feeding on or else they were in a catatonic state. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Terryland Forest Park survey 17th August 2013. birdsgalway: November 2012
http://birdsgalway.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Monday, 5 November 2012. Eight weeks of armchair birding and a serious case of cabin fever I went to Nimmo's and was delight to see the Forster's Tern back at its old location on Claddagh Beach. 8-9 years this bird has made its way around Ireland's shore from Wexford to Louth and Galway. Usually accompanied by 4-6 Sandwich Terns. On Saturday a Glaucous Gull put in an appearance for the few who came along for BirdWatch Galway's 1st Saturday walk at Nimmo's. Links to this post. Cork city wildlife: December 2012
http://corkwildlife.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 12, 2012. Vorkstaartmeeuw / Sabine's gull. Leon van der Noll. When I got there, I soon found the gull off the pier in the town, quite willing to do some flybys. Unfortunately the light was less then ideal. In fact glare from the sun and the grey of a cloudy sky had banded together to make it near impossible. With some grey and silhouetted pics under my belt I decided to wander and wait for the light to get better. It didn’t! I may yet return if the bird sticks around after Christmas.

Wednesday, 31 December 2014. Showy Glaucous Gulls in Peterborough. Several thousand gulls at Dogsthorpe on New Year's Eve including the second-winter Iceland Gull again and two juvenile Glaucous Gulls. I was photographing one thinking it looked a bit more robust than the previous day's bird, not noticing the second in the images until I reviewed a few of the shots. A quick look through the 'scope and there they were, side by side - quite amazing! Tuesday, 30 December 2014. Monday, 29 December 2014. This ...

Cork city wildlife: May 2013
http://corkwildlife.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 25, 2013. Leon van der Noll. In Ireland, the orange tip butterfly is the most colourful of the pieridae (white) butterflies in that the males have bright orange tips to their wings and both sexes have a quite distinctive marbled green pattern on their underwings. It is a widespread species, occurring in every county. Female orange tip. They usually stay close to foodplants whilst the males wander further. Orange tips are one of the smaller white species in Ireland. Sunday, May 5, 2013.

Cork city wildlife: March 2013
http://corkwildlife.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Wednesday, March 27, 2013. Birds springing to life. Leon van der Noll. Little magpies. There was five of them fighting on the ground. Starlings in a field, showing the yellow bill colour that they develop for the breeding season. Always nice to see the various colours hidden in the starlings plumage. A female chaffinch which decided to pose for the camera. Long tailed tit. Frustrating bird to photograph as it sits still for only a few seconds. Some day I'll actually get a good shot of one! A few weeks ba...

Josh's Blog: Homefield, 6 June
http://joshrjones.blogspot.com/2015/06/homefield-6-june.html
Tuesday, 9 June 2015. Homefield, 6 June. On Saturday morning I visited Homefield Wood near Marlow. Military Orchids were just past their peak with some plants browning, although those in the shadier areas still looked pretty good. I've visited this site at least once for the past three years and my impression was that there were fewer plants this year, and most were smaller in size than I remember them being. Perhaps I was looking through rose-tinted spectacles in the past. The most impressive specimen.
