A life, unanticipated. Month: June, 2013. It was a long, tiring spring. Bad things seemed to follow one after the other. One consequence of the disruption was that my workouts at the gym were shot to hell, and I feel out-of-shape, flabby. Not just flabby in body but flabby in mind, doughy in spirit. But summer is now here. For me it’s the best time of year here, perhaps the best time of year anywhere in the world I would be. It’s the season of sunflowers and thunderstorms. Crazy days, once again.

A life, unanticipated. Month: November, 2012. Here in Finland there’s one big December holiday before Christmas to break up the autumn gloom: Independence Day, on 6 December. For me the period between Thanksgiving and Independence day here feels like an appendix to the fall season. After a long, unseasonably warm few weeks since the last snow, it’s snowing again. I will sound McLuhan-esque, I know, when I reiterate the idea that our smartphones are extensions of our senses and faculties of communication and creation. Does our augmentation in this fashion make us more or less human? How, either way? From a theological perspective, does our augmentation make us more or less open to the Other? Does it sharpen or blunt the ethical claim of the Other on us?
