Sheffield is not place. If you have a spare half hour you can read what it’s all about, I’ve put my proposal up in docs…. After a long meeting in Wath upon Dearne I have finally persuaded the NCWA to allow me to make a film with them. Work will begin in February 2014. Arts Council Sheffield Council. You’re Not Alone. More work soon for the archive from the inimitable Andy Brown, some moving images from the Children’s Hospital. For a preview peek go to www.envioustime.co.uk. Don’t expect it to make ...

Sheffield is not place. I spent a morning in the Children’s Hospital in Sheffield documenting a 12 year-old girl who was receiving chemotherapy. Chemo patients and their families spend hours in waiting rooms during treatment. One of the reasons for this is that cytotoxic drugs are made up to order within the hospital.

Sheffield is not place. Dave is a 6 foot 8, 19 stone boxer. He is big and so is his talent. Dave has surrounded himself with a team of equally dedicated people addressing everything from his nutrition to what he wears. This work will follow him through his training to his next few fights culminating hopefully in challenging for the British title. Dave joined the renowned Ingle gym in Winkobank last year making a marked difference to his craft and ability. Eight wins, four by knockout.

Sheffield is not place. You’re Not Alone. Taken during an Arts Council funded documentation of the Children’s Hospital in Sheffield, these portraits show children immediately before and after a surgical procedure to have teeth removed. They were asked to pose for the second picture even though they were recovering from general anaesthetic. It is receiving widespread recognition; Being Brave being featured in last years best of “It’s Nice That”.

Sheffield is not place. Abundance is a fruit harvesting and distribution project that started in Sheffield and since has inspired similar projects across the country. It’s basically legal scrumping. Tree owners call Abundance, Abundance round up the volunteers, they harvest the fruit, returning some to the owners, and distributing, pickling, or making chutney with the rest. All is given away, with the chutneys sold to cover the basic costs.

Sheffield is not place. I met these fine gentlemen, and one lady, on cold night in February at the library theatre. It was an instant nostalgia hit for me reviving memories of Giant Haystacks and Kendo Nagasaki doing battle on a Saturday, watching it with my dad then afterwards scrapping on the floor with my brothers. A good night out!

Sheffield is not place. It is an interesting time for this company bringing together as they are all the groups concerns under one roof on Effingham Road. The sheer logistical problems this represents will take some resolving. My particular concerns for the study are the apprentices, many of the workforce who command some of the key skills are very close to retirement and the company’s longevity will rely on these skills being passed on.

Sheffield is not place. In 1872 my great great grandfather, Henry, moved to Sheffield from Birmingham (as you would) and established a company to make knife sharpening tools. Five generations later it is still there on Allen Street. The Egginton Group includes some historic Sheffield brands; George Wostenholm, Joseph Rodgers and Ibberson.

In Between Days | archive sheffield

Sheffield is not place. Youth charity Centrepoint estimates that 1 in 100 young people experience homelessness each year in the United Kingdom, mostly caused by family breakdown. Services and help for these young people is severely underfunded and oversubscribed: the Roundabout hostel in Sheffield, where I began this project, has to turn away 15 young people a week looking for shelter due to a lack of bedspace.
