About – a part of the story

A part of the story. No beginning, middle or end. Parts of the Story. Get creative – how to contribute. A Part of the Story exists to practice the art of creative writing and explore the intersection between story, photography and imagination (in a less pretentious way then it sounds). The photos are chosen by an editor from a collection of more than 18,000, picked more for what they may inspire then their quality. 3 thoughts on “About”. June 15, 2012 at 3:29 am. A part of the story. No beginning, middle or end. Parts of the Story. Get creative – how to contribute. Tharp had come to the High Fort as a precocious five-year old and as a young boy had seen numerous visitors to the mountain. The number of arrivals had diminished slowly until it had become a shock if anyone crossed over one of the surrounding paths to the palace. The last six years had been almost silent, the guards left to watch for shadows and live off remembered stories. He ran to fetch one of the ...

142 Books: April 2013

http://142-books.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Poetry, Essays, Fiction. Wednesday, April 3, 2013. A new take on Maudlin Manor. Once upon a time ago. There lived a pair of twins. Stuck their dolls with pins. They looked like little angels. Wrapped in silk and pearls. But they were rotten little devils. Masquerading as little girls. They lived in the house called Maudlin. A family name I suppose. But suited to the children. They have a nasty habit. Of staring straight ahead. They may have been alive once. But now they’re very dead. Open up the windows.

142 Books: October 2012

http://142-books.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Poetry, Essays, Fiction. Wednesday, October 31, 2012. Somewhere in this house a child is laughing. Footsteps run down the hall above me then stop. Then start again followed by the laughter. I don’t know who she is, only that she will not leave. I have asked her to go many times. I’ve tried to be reasonable. I’ve asked her what she wants but it’s as if she doesn’t hear me at all. She only stops and looks, then smiles and runs away and up the stairs to resume her game. I don’t know what to do.

Poetry, Essays, Fiction. Thursday, January 17, 2013. Excerpt from The Flight of Sebastian Bean. The Flight of Sebastian Bean. Tories like this one always begin in misery. Here was a time when Sebastian Bean had two parents, a beautiful mother and a handsome father. They all lived together in a tall narrow house on a lovely tree lined street in a fashionable area of a quaint and historic city. He was a very, very lucky boy and then all at once he wasn’t. Something wasn’t right. He got out of his bed and o...

http://142-books.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Poetry, Essays, Fiction. Friday, May 17, 2013. Afraid to pluck it. In case there are no more. It withers where it grows. Instead of spreading seeds. Just a momentary thrill. Dried up and then forgotten. Unable to bridge the gap. Between longing and outcome. By the ceiling and the way the gray light. Leaves smudges in the corners. To pull the curtains. Let the light in. To get out of my own way. And so the wanting sits. Like a parasite to my host. And laying waste to desire. Leaving only the burning.

Poetry, Essays, Fiction. Sunday, September 30, 2012. I walked through a forest. Shorn of their needles. Tuesday, September 11, 2012. The House on Dorsey Street. There is a house on Dorsey Street. I’ve passed it many times. And each time I find it weeping. Raining rivers from windows. Unused to the sun. That it leaks so uncontrollably. I’ve heard the stories. Whispered from one ear to another. And seen the way passersby speed their steps. Looking over tweed clad shoulders and upturned collars. Third Sunda...

142 Books: What Kind of Writer Are You?

http://142-books.blogspot.com/2013/08/what-kind-of-writer-are-you.html

Poetry, Essays, Fiction. Monday, August 12, 2013. What Kind of Writer Are You? I have asked myself this question many times, taken online quizzes and submitted samples for analysis and at the end of it all I’ve determined that I don’t one hundred percent know what kind of writer I am. I know what I like to write. I like to write poetry when I’m particularly stressed or emotional. I write quickly without any rules and let the words arrive of their own volition. Sometimes I write historical fiction. I love...

142 Books: June 2012

http://142-books.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Poetry, Essays, Fiction. Thursday, June 21, 2012. It seems that most of us go through life looking for the elusive ‘it’. The thing that makes us who we are. The thing that makes us tick. We tell ourselves that if we can just find that one thing that sets us apart we'll find the missing connection. We'll get our 'Aha! Moment, the lightbulb will go on and suddenly the world as we know it will make sense. I can't help wondering whether this is a giant recipe for disaster. It keeps us looking forward. Perhap...

Poetry, Essays, Fiction. Friday, November 30, 2012. I wish I was the kind of diarist who could draw clever cartoons or renderings of beautiful houses or hilarious sayings in the margins of my journals but I’m not. Sometimes I glue things in first and then write over top of that but mostly I just write. It is the best way I know to get rid of the junk in my head. I journal because I get to say anything I want. Say it badly if I want. I don’t do it on purpose. I’ve just always been that way. Why am I sad?

142 Books: Death of the Storybook

http://142-books.blogspot.com/2015/04/death-of-storybook.html

Poetry, Essays, Fiction. Tuesday, April 14, 2015. Death of the Storybook. I recently submitted a story to an agent for a critique. She said that my writing was good. Her only concern was that she didn't feel my work would be mainstream. At 996 words it was considered too long to be a picture book and that there was no longer a market for storybooks. That's not to say that there aren't many wonderful books written to that length. But that comment did seem to speak to our hurried and harried way of life.
