記得以前在一篇 Blog 內提過大學一年級的建築史考試中, 問到蘇菲亞大教堂的穹頂有何結構上的突破, 我的答案是圓形. 的, 所以是很難建, 此種答案當然是無恥之極, 現在想來也覺顏汗. 蘇菲亞大教堂建於 535 年, 蘇菲亞(Hagia Sophia)的意思是上帝的智慧。大教堂是典型拜占庭風格； 拜占庭建築的最大特色就是穹頂, 承襲自古羅馬。一般的做法是穹頂下用柱支撐，因此在平面佈局都是圓形, 例如羅馬的萬神廟。 人已改信基督教，教堂的平面一定要是十字架形, 圓形平面跟香港的鑽石廳一般不受歡迎。建築師因此就發明了帆穹 (Pendentive), 就是一個像船的. 帆一般的小三角, 於是圓形就可以放在四方上。蘇菲亞就是使用帆穹的代表. 由於她的穹頂很大, 蘇菲亞也有很大的結構問題，, 但經歷過多次的地震和之後的維修，穹頂已成橢圓形, 到了現代還要裝上. 蘇菲亞一開始是基督教教堂, 十五世紀改為清真寺, 1935 年後又變成了博物館。近年有人呼籲把蘇菲亞改回東正教堂，但. 又有土耳其政客發起將她變回清真寺。其實為了避免宗教爭拗, 還是保留為世俗化的博物館為妙。 然而將一群明星建築師放在一起, 也產生不少問...

一個平常的工作天, 辦公室突然走進一群警察, 從窗口爬出二十五樓的平台, 坐在窗口附近的職員也要暫時停工, 公司四分之一也停頓了,同事都有點手足無措, 事情也擾攘了好幾個小時. 這是筆者的親身經歷, 當時是2009年, 正值金融海嘯, 一名五十四歲女子從帝國大廈的三十九樓跳下, 落在筆者辦公室所在的二十五樓的平台上. 事後該女子証實死亡. 自建成以來, 帝國大廈可說是飽經考驗, 除了1933年和2005年遭King Kong 蹂躪之外, 單是如上述的自殺已有三十多宗. 其中在 1947年的女子, 在八十八樓觀景臺跳下來, 死後被拍下來, 成為著名的新聞照片, 被喻為最美麗的自殺. 事後發現她的遺書: "沒有我，他會更好.我當不了一個好妻子" 故事十分淒美. 帝國大廈在美國, 當然經歷過槍擊事情, 只發生過兩次, 分別在1997 年和 2012年. 另外,1945 年, 一架美國軍機因天氣關係, 能見度太低而撞向帝國大廈的北面, 幸運地大廈結構無損, 但也奪去了十四條性命. 的佳士拿大廈比高, 當得悉佳士拿大廈增高後, 帝國大廈便從原來. 05 2 X John Hancock. 1973 工程仍在進行中...

如果你居住在北方有雪的地方, 大概你也曾經歴過, 下完大雪後積雪在路邊堆得高高, 非常不便, 試想像那堆不是潔白的雪, 也不會自然溶化流走, 還會吸引蒼蠅, 傳播細菌，發出惡臭, 而且一年四季都在。這嘔心的塲面不是惡夢，而是十九世紀中紐約、倫敦、芝加哥等大城市常見的現象。 時間大約是十九世紀的中葉, 紐約的人口激增至八十多萬，當時還未沒有汽車, 運輸全依賴馬車, 理應是空氣清新而且十分浪漫。但八十多萬的人口就需要大約十五萬匹的馬來拉車, 想像要養這麼多的馬需要大量的飼料、馬房、馬伕、獸醫等, 成本絕對不會低過現在的油站、停車塲和車房. 更嚴重的問題, 一匹馬平均每天產生大約二十五磅馬糞，十五萬匹馬, 總共就是每天近四百萬磅的糞便, 四百萬磅! 相等於三萬多人的重量。還有十五萬公升的馬尿, 一天就可以供應二萬人做冰桶挑戰。馬糞太多來不及立刻運走, 先是堆積路邊或空地, 當時就有「馬糞街區」(Manure block)- 整個街區 (city block)被列作放馬糞用。 夢續城西 Keypad Sept-issue: Architalk. 試想在市中心有一條荒廢了的高架鐵路,人人視為眼中釘，...

Tuesday, March 3, 2015. 最近常於報張及社交網站看到有關中國人在外遊時被人投訴讓小孩隨地大、小便的文章或照片，令我有一番感想。 本人也出生於當今強國，可惜七十年代初強國還於微時，當時從未有機會出國旅遊，或在文物上留名。亦無幸在巴黎的名店外排隊，但卻會與父母於假期去一去蘇州的東山，西山，或就近的太湖，在遊客止步的欄杆前偷看一下只供外國遊客出入的太湖酒店及停泊在湖邊的遊艇。 小時候也穿過開襠褲，但只限在家里穿。困為天氣冷，內褲加上長褲，外再加上棉褲，大人為了小孩上廁所不會受涼，開襠褲是比較方便。但是絶不會在馬路上大小便！偶然也會在火車站或什麼地方看到有外地的人讓小孩穿着開襠褲隨地小便，大家也見怪不怪，只會拋下一句"鄉下人! 但我承認在公德方面是比較差。我有一個印象是 - " 國家的就是大家的嘛！" 所以郊遊的時候看到樹上的果子，漂亮的花朵，採摘是必然的。公園的竹林裡冒出了筍尖，媽媽會馬上拿出軍刀挖掘一番，順便再割些薺菜回家包雲吞。 這樣別人才不會插進來呀？" 還差沒説出口的是"你不要動來動去,讓我好好點着吧！". 這時候，我在窗內看着爸爸跟姑媽還未能擠上車，...這是去年在妹妹家過聖誕...

Tuesday, March 3, 2015. 小時候有一景象一直深深印在我的腦海裡。話說七十年代，在春季的一個周日，與家人去遊湖 - 無錫的太湖，春光明媚，磷光片片，遊人也不少。大伙登高的登高、嬉水的嬉水，一整天的光景很快過去。大家帶着疲乏的身軀，準備乘車歸家。 到了巴士站一看，說不上人山人海也起碼有幾十人。怎麼辦？眼看巴士上已擠得滿滿了，但這並未減退車下人羣往上湧的行動。好不容易車開動了連門都未能關上。還好，又有一輛公車來了，這次我們是無論如何也得擠上去的。人們湧向前後的二個車門，媽媽好不容易擠上去了，爸爸便直接把我跟妹妹從半開的車窗往里送，媽在車里也擠向窗口接應，非常有默契。小孩也訓練有素，並不哭叫，反而顯得有些得意，因為這是我們的特權。大人是擠不進窗口的。當然也有例外。 Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Monday, June 15, 2015. 今天整理文件，找到以前的一些扎記，二零零九年，那時女兒才五歲. 乘著女兒上了學，趕緊去唐人街買些東西。那天天氣極差，大約攝氏負一度，還下著毛毛雨。我出門才發覺下雨，就懶得再折回取傘了。冒著雨走在Grand street 的行人道上，地上濕滑不堪，又要小心從路邊魚店里流出行人道的污水，又要閃避推着蔬菜貨物的工人，嘗試慢慢越過走路蹣跚的老人。 經過金龍船餅店，想了想轉回頭走了進去。裡面滿滿的擠滿了人，可以坐的位置都坐滿了。主要是上了年紀的人，好像都認識似地談着話。在至少暖和的店里，我買了一杯奶茶及一個蛋撻，走到接近門口的一排坐位，看到有一個空位子，我擠過去，小心地問坐位旁邊的一位大嬸，因為坐位上有她的包及買的小菜，還有桌面上，大咧咧的橫躺着她的傘。我想，雖然她對面的位子也空着，但想她一定在等人吧，所以只問她旁邊的位...Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
