We had a brilliant day on sunday, when a white-tailed eagle turned up a the hide and hung around for over 2 hours, despite being mobbed by 30 red kites! He’s a 2011 youngster from the East coast re-introduction and had wingtags “Red T”. After speaking to the East Coast project officer we can now give you all a few extra details about our special visitor! Birds at Argaty (24).

How to find us. Guided walks – spend a day with us. Argaty is a 1370 acre farm of mixed moorland and upland pasture and includes some 300 acres of both deciduous and coniferous woodland. The area is rich in wildlife, boasting over 100 different bird species, wild flower meadows and a whole range of wild animals from red squirrels to red deer. How to find us. The whole aim of the project is to have a self-sustaining population of Red Kites back in the wild, so the feeding here is minimal. We staff the hide only to coincide with feeding time, but the hide, visitor centre and toilets are open all day. There is an all-abilities path to the hide (500m), toilets (including disabled facilities), and visitor centre with hot drinks available (but no café) and picnic tables next to the bumblebee garden. How to find us. Most of the photographs of the kites on this website were taken from the hide with a 300mm lens plus 1.4TC – all hand-held. A tripod isn’t very useful to bring as the seats in the hide get in the way, but a bean bag or small support can be very helpful. Open today as usual but bring your wellies! Pre-booking recommended particularly at weekends. Ranger led visit at feeding time - see below for start time. If you visit outwith feeding time you will find the hide and visitor centre open but unstaffed and operating on an Honesty Box system.
