San Cayetano de Tumacacori was originally founded by Father Kino a Jesuit Missionary in 1691. The community later relocated to be closer to the Tubac Presidio. The Tumacacori Mission as it now stands was built by the Franciscans in early 1800. In 1828 the remaining priest was deported by the Mexican government and the church was maintained by the community until it was abandoned in 1848. The bell tower never being completed.
