Important: This REU site is no longer active. The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. Provided opportunities to obtain meaningful experiences to undergraduates, especially minority students, in the area of synthesis of functional nanomaterials and the behavior of nanostructured materials. Students had the opportunity of visiting local educational and cultural attractions during the weekends, including the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center's Arecibo Observatory. Scientific Fair

By encouraging students to participate in the Science Fair, the interest in research is also being developed. Since 2004 there has been students that have been efficiently motivated to participate in the Local Science Fairs by working in the Labs. During this process the students have a designated supervisor, an undergraduated or graduated student, that will supervise all the experimentation procedure and will teach how to use certain equipments that may be necessary.
