For this installment we’ll be featuring a place you can actually buy if you’ve got some money and a whole lot of gumption: Fort Bayard, New Mexico. The lost and wondrous wreckage of America. The ceaseless road to nowhere. Yeah, that's my home. Saturday, August 23, 2014. The Way Things Weren’t: Kingston, NM. Now, everyone agrees that in the early 1880’s precious metal, particularly silver, was found in the area. Ralph Looney’s Haunted Highways. Which had been established in 1877. Been mined in the vicinity, not an inconsiderable sum. But it took over 20 years; that amount was never in the Percha Bank. That Chief Victorio’s band of Apaches once ...

CITY OF DUST: November 2014

The lost and wondrous wreckage of America. The ceaseless road to nowhere. Yeah, that's my home. Thursday, November 06, 2014. On the Edge of the Staked Plain: House, NM. The more I learn about the Llano Estacado, or Staked Plain, the massive tableland that covers over 37,000 square miles of west Texas and eastern New Mexico, the more fascinating and evocative I find it. We’ve visited Causey. The building above was once a hardware store.). In 1948, 325 kids attended 1st-12th grade in House and almost every...

The lost and wondrous wreckage of America. The ceaseless road to nowhere. Yeah, that's my home. Sunday, April 20, 2014. Copper, Turquoise, and Moonshine: Gleeson, AZ. It’s seems like a long time since I last posted on City of Dust but I guess it hasn’t even been a month. I’ve covered some miles since then, so maybe that’s why it feels like I’ve been away awhile. Now we’ve reached our last stop on the Cochise County Ghost Town Trail. Finally, the post office left in 1939 and the last mine shut in 1953.

The lost and wondrous wreckage of America. The ceaseless road to nowhere. Yeah, that's my home. Monday, May 12, 2014. The Best Little Stop on I-40: Twin Arrows, AZ. A couple of years ago I wrote about Two Guns, Arizona. Originally known as Canyon Padre Trading Post and likely built sometime after 1946 (it’s absent from that year’s comprehensive A Guide Book to Highway 66. While one could argue that death and sorrow did more damage to Two Guns. The ruination of the dining car, in particular, is a shame be...

Washed-Up Thinking – Reconnecting to the American Promise
https://newamericancenter.org/2015/02/08/washed-up-thinking
Reconnecting to the American Promise. February 8, 2015. By Carl W. Hunt. My wife and I are fortunate to live near the beach. As I’ve described before. We live in Lewes, Delaware, where the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware Bay meet at Cape Henlopen. The bay and Cape Henlopen were first discovered by Henry Hudson. None other than William Penn, the first governor of the Pennsylvania colony, set aside Cape Henlopen to be a family park in the designation of some of the first public. In addition to just walking...

The lost and wondrous wreckage of America. The ceaseless road to nowhere. Yeah, that's my home. Sunday, October 12, 2014. A Lively and Energetic Place: Pep, New Mexico. Popular during the Depression. Neither of those stories is true though and, really, Pep was probably named for the reason you’d guess at first glance. The place that would become Pep was settled in the fall of 1925 by Edward Cox, who established the first residence and store. T.M. Pearce, who wrote New Mexico Place Names. There’s a ...

The lost and wondrous wreckage of America. The ceaseless road to nowhere. Yeah, that's my home. Saturday, January 25, 2014. Willis Earl Beal - A Place That Doesn’t Exist. But it wasn’t long into his burger-flipping career that Willis had to leave Wendy’s. He’d eaten one of his own creations, among other infractions. Soon after that, he would have to leave Albuquerque entirely. But none of that matters now. Now there’s another set of songs, A Place That Doesn’t Exist. This recording was ha...Only 100 copi...

CITY OF DUST: February 2014

The lost and wondrous wreckage of America. The ceaseless road to nowhere. Yeah, that's my home. Friday, February 21, 2014. The cabin had weathered the monsoon just fine and we loaded in some food and extra blankets. It was starting to get colder now, especially in the early morning hours. There was still plenty of firewood stacked along the side of the cabin and as the first big droplets of rain began to fall we brought some of the wood inside and started a fire. As it got dark the rain began to taper of...

The lost and wondrous wreckage of America. The ceaseless road to nowhere. Yeah, that's my home. Friday, March 28, 2014. And You Will Know Me by My Jail: Courtland, AZ. Traveling southwestward down the dusty Ghost Town Trail. The population eventually reached 2,000 and there were the usual amenities, including saloons, hotels (the “Courtland” and “Great Western” being the most popular), restaurants, and stage stations. The newspaper, the Courtland Arizonan. Pushed them back south for good. Visited in the ...
