A Twitcher's Tale: GREY SHRIKE-THRUSH: A MIMIC

http://www.atwitcherstale.blogspot.com/2015/03/grey-shrike-thrush-mimic.html

Buy books by Sue Taylor. Sunday, 15 March 2015. GREY SHRIKE-THRUSH: A MIMIC. Grey Shrike-thrush, a mimic. Last week, Rog and I spent an enjoyable couple of days around Rutherglen. Unfortunately, our car demanded a new battery, so my birding was thwarted a little, and I couldn't get to all my favourite spots. They had finished nesting when I was there, but Jim and I stood on the bridge, hoping that a tell-tale flash of azure blue would alert us to the bird's presence. We had other things to amuse us too: ...

A Twitcher's Tale: WONDERFUL WERRIBEE AGAIN

http://www.atwitcherstale.blogspot.com/2015/03/wonderful-werribee-again.html

Buy books by Sue Taylor. Wednesday, 11 March 2015. Yesterday, I visited the Western Treatment Plant at Werribee for the first time this year. It was wonderful, as usual. The sun shone, the birds foraged and the company was great. I didn't see any rarities, but I certainly saw lots of birds. There were still plenty of waders, mainly stints, but Sharp-tailed and Curlew Sandpipers too. I saw about twenty Great Crested Grebes (aren't they funny? And Jane Wright, his delightful wife, is an entomologist. ANOTH...

A Twitcher's Tale: SUCCESS WITH A SLENDER-BILLED PRION!

http://www.atwitcherstale.blogspot.com/2015/07/success-with-slender-billed-prion.html

Buy books by Sue Taylor. Monday, 20 July 2015. SUCCESS WITH A SLENDER-BILLED PRION! I thank everyone who's been on a winter pelagic with me over the last few years and endured my loud frustrations at missing out on this recalcitrant whalebird. Finally, I have seen it. Now, just the White-necked Petrel remains. Next summer perhaps. Southern Giant-Petrel, photo by James Mustafa. Slender-billed Prion, photo by Bruce Wedderburn. Sooty Albatross, photo by James Mustafa. The weather was cold (very cold!

A Twitcher's Tale: August 2014

http://www.atwitcherstale.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Buy books by Sue Taylor. Sunday, 31 August 2014. Tawny Frogmouth - a bird I did not see in August. It is spring at last and I can say goodbye to August, always one of my worst months for birding. It's not that the cold Melbourne weather keeps me inside and not looking, it's just that I never see much during the month of August. This means I know what a dreadful record I have during past Augusts. At Karkarook (as I previously reported) I saw Blue-billed Duck, but not much else. I should have no trouble at...

For the Love of Birds: December 2013

http://fortheloveof-birds.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, December 18, 2013. Apologies for the lack of pictures in this relatively long report - summer birding in central Australia is tiring enough without worrying about photos! All the following were taken with my iPhone (when I get around to uploading them.). What better way to spend summer than in the desert? Ashwin Rudder and I headed out for a few days to Lake Cargelligo in central NSW to search the mallee of nearby Round Hill, Nombinnie and Yathong Nature Reserves for interesting birds and herps.

Sunday, July 27, 2014. A Taste of Grasswrens - The Gawler Ranges Return. Hi everyone, it's been a while! On the road at 5am, we rendezvoused with Grant and Rob for lunch in Nyngan. Our raptor tally for the trip got off to a good start with Spotted Harrier, Little Eagle and more than twenty Black Kite all recorded on the drive. We finished off the day with some great Chinese to celebrate Josh’s 19. On the road again we headed further west through Wilcannia (missing Red-tailed Black Cockatoo here), dodging...

For the Love of Birds: May 2013

http://fortheloveof-birds.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 5, 2013. It seems that in updating to a new email address yesterday and deleting my old blogger account, I also deleted every single photo on the blog. Will take me a while to replace everything, so for a while all the blog archives may just be text reports. I don't think I will get around to fixing this until after the HSC finishes in November. A Very Annoyed Joshua Bergmark. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Birding Penang: Spotted Wood-Owl At Last. VERY PARCHED ASHMORE REEF, NOVEMBER 2016.

For the Love of Birds: FATS in the Watagans

http://fortheloveof-birds.blogspot.com/2013/12/fats-in-watagans.html

Wednesday, December 11, 2013. FATS in the Watagans. Murray Lord kindly offered to drive me up to the Watagan Mountains this past Saturday to attend the FATS (Frog and Tadpole Society) field outing. Unlike most of my attempts at frogging and herping this year, it was quite a successful night (even if the professionals thought the numbers were very low! Here are a few of my shots. For the Love of Birds: December 2012

http://fortheloveof-birds.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 25, 2012. With a nice early start, I was just pulling up to Max’s house at 5:30 when a small flock of Topknot Pigeons flew in front of the car. A good start to the day! Alas, we could not get eyes on it, it did not call again, and we were not able to be sure the call didn’t come from a very skilled lyrebird (which had just recently done an impressive White-throated Nightjar impersonation). I have no photos from the day, because they were all terrible ;) The sunburnt neck (with obligator...

http://fortheloveof-birds.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, November 3, 2012. Max and I disregarded all school-work for the weekend and headed up to Newcastle for an attempt at Arctic Tern, one of which had been hanging around at Newcastle Baths all week. We stopped by at Max's relatives' place to watch the newly restored Catalina fly in for the annual Catalina Festival. Assorted Waders - no Banded Stilt. Posted by Joshua Bergmark. For the Love of Birds: October 2013

http://fortheloveof-birds.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, October 27, 2013. Pitt Town was positively booming, with our list at 68 species in only 2 hours. Other highlights included 15 Glossy Ibis, 5 Red-kneed Dotterel, a large mixed flock of Chestnut-breasted and Scaly-breasted Munia/Mannikin, Double-barred Finch, Whiskered Tern and hundreds of Sharpies. Frustratingly the Pectoral Sandpipers and Painted Honeyeater were resighted over the next two days, so another trip is in order as soon as I finish these damn exams on Monday! Marsh Sandpiper #1 and #2.

For the Love of Birds: The Returning Forties

http://fortheloveof-birds.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-returning-forties.html

Tuesday, December 10, 2013. Day 9: 23rd November. We awoke early at our anchorage at Campbell Island to scan the shoreline of Perseverance Harbour with Dani's and Rob's scopes for Campbell Teal, but were unsuccessful save for myself and Rob briefly seeing one scuttle off the shoreline into some tussocks from a great distance. Nobody had a wide-angle lens with them. We opted to follow the creek line back down to avoid the tea trees, which was an excellent decision and took very little effort, though we ha...
