Austen and Aliens: August 2011
http://austenandaliens.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
From empire waists to interstellar empires. Tuesday, August 16, 2011. Sometimes I wonder how much of my life has been influenced by where I grew up. Anywhere, except for the suburbs themselves. The closest major city was Los Angeles, all spread out and gleaming and so emphatically and insistently new. But even LA was an hour away, and for eighteen years, I probably spent 90% of my time within a fifteen-mile radius of home. But for me, it's more than that. It's about reversing the movement west, the m...
Austen and Aliens: January 2011
http://austenandaliens.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
From empire waists to interstellar empires. Wednesday, January 26, 2011. Following the fairytale: Beauty and the Beast. This past weekend, I came down with an irascible cold, but as much as I lamented the loss of time and mental acuity that could have been spent on homework, one brilliant thing did come of it: for the first time in a couple of years (and for the first time ever on DVD), I re-watched Disney's Beauty and the Beast. She can't even see him, and she offers herself in her father's place - but ...
Austen and Aliens: June 2011
http://austenandaliens.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
From empire waists to interstellar empires. Wednesday, June 22, 2011. Why I Love Young Wizards. When I first started this blog almost a year ago, my goal was clear: I needed someplace to squee, rant, and flail - albeit in a slightly more academic manner - about the things that I loved most in life and literature. Up at the top of the flail-worthy list is, and has always. Been, Diane Duane's Young Wizards. I've recommended the series to everyone I know. I've posted about it on other. None of this has serv...
Austen and Aliens: October 2011
http://austenandaliens.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
From empire waists to interstellar empires. Tuesday, October 11, 2011. What Makes a Good Novel. When I started work as an intern for the Office of Letters and Light. Back in September 2007, one of the first perks of the job (after the burrito lunches and scintillating office conversation) came in the form of a free copy of Chris Baty's No Plot? The book serves as a kind of manual or advice handbook for participating in National Novel Writing Month. A challenge I've explained elsewhere. I've forgotten mor...
Austen and Aliens: December 2011
http://austenandaliens.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
From empire waists to interstellar empires. Thursday, December 1, 2011. But it's something I care about, deeply, something in which I'm still incredibly invested, and right now this makes all the difference. Fifteen to twenty of those fifty pages will be spent writing about George Eliot's Middlemarch. A calling, something you are. Instead of just something you do. Or to put Eliot's question another way: why is it that no one writes novels about how men and women come to fall in love with their jobs?

Day 18: Jane Austen English department AU (+ seminar paper planning) - Work In Progress
http://readingredhead.livejournal.com/292572.html
Were all stories in the end. Just make it a good one. Day 18: Jane Austen English department AU ( seminar paper planning). Mar 18th, 2013 at 5:47 PM. It's a truth universally acknowledged that the best. AU is and will always be. Because let me tell you, professors and grad students in English departments are. I'm going to spend a little bit of time thinking through the various characters and how to transpose them to this new modern setting. Emma's rich but ailing father, who lives in a spacious apartment...

Any girl who reads is already a lost girl." Lisa Robertson. Best Book to Read. When We Were Random. Wednesday, June 29, 2011. Them, just that their presence seems necessary for the story to continue. But sometimes, we do. Like them - or at least, I. Do - and we find ourselves wishing that some particular character would elbow aside the protagonist, at least for a moment, and show us. There are a lot of failed couples floating about in Persuasion. Sophy Croft may play a minor role in Persuasion. Is a myst...

Were all stories in the end. Just make it a good one. Day 17: some meta on making, chocolate brioche pretzel rolls. Mar 17th, 2013 at 6:09 PM. After deciding, totally on a whim (and with far less forethought than I should have invested in it) to follow a friend's challenge to create something every day for the month of March. I started thinking a lot about what it means, for me, to MAKE something, and how that's changed over the past few years. Get paid to sit on my couch all day and read books! Them, an...

NaCreSoMo Day 2 - Work In Progress
http://readingredhead.livejournal.com/291099.html
Were all stories in the end. Just make it a good one. Mar 2nd, 2013 at 9:21 PM. Today, I did a fair amount of planning work on the first paper for one of my seminars. I wrote up a lot of notes about it. On my academic Dreamwidth account, if anyone really wants to read about thoughts on late-17th/early-18th-century women's writing and the creation of virtual or actual female homosociality, but I don't blame you if you don't. Please comment there using OpenID. A month of making. Julie E. Czerneda.

Austen and Aliens
From empire waists to interstellar empires. Sunday, March 4, 2012. This great and trivial story": a love-affair with print. By Honoré de Balzac, trans. by Herbert J. Hunt. I am fascinated with late-18th-century/early-19th-century French and British printing and bookselling. It started as a fluke. I was introduced to the Albion press. Owned by my university's rare books library at around the same time that I was brainstorming the NaNoWriMo project that became. As well as texts. Of excitement every time a ...

Austen and Football
Sunday, July 11, 2010. So who wants to buy me a palace.wink wink wink. Kamilla and I decided to take a little city break on one of our free Mondays. We were going to try and make a trip to our Jane Austen Mecca, the Chatsworth House or aka known as Pemberley. However, with a four-hour journey each way, we decided that we would save it for another day, especially because we had to be back by 7 to see Enron. While the walls were lavished with paintings and golden tapestries, the rooms were very barren.
