Children's Book Author. Website of Susan Shaw. Monthly Archives: October 2011. Hello, beautiful people. Hey, everybody. Welcome to my first blog. Hope you’re having a wonderful day. I’m not sure how often I’ll be adding to this–maybe a couple of times a week. Check back. You never know what little pearls might turn up here. But then I’ll be back at it, sitting behind my computer and typing to keep up with the story as it plays itself across my brain. Official site of Newbery winning author Jerry Spinelli.

Children's Book Author. Website of Susan Shaw. Newer posts →. The mail problem is fixed. So be in touch. What I’m thinking about today as I write is attitude. Not my attitude, although it helps to have a good one. No, I’m thinking about my protagonist. I came to a slowdown in my rough draft, a place where I had written a sort of shorthand–just the facts, ma’am! Who wants a cold, uncooked. peeled potato? Even with butter or salt and pepper on it? Then I thought–. How would he act and react? Now he’s...

Children's Book Author. Website of Susan Shaw. Monthly Archives: June 2013. Book-signing, teen workshop, molasses, and the start of a new story. Thanks to all who stopped by at last night’s book-signing. I enjoyed talking to every one of you. It was also kind of cool to watch the parade of kiddies with their treasures of balloon art and face paintings and mouthfuls of cake behind blue-icing lips. How can that not be fun? Start with a cup of sugar, a cup of flour, a cup of molasses–oh, no that’...

Children's Book Author. Website of Susan Shaw. Monthly Archives: November 2011. Book signings, art galleries, and the laughing muse. The signing at Chester County Books will be a mass signing–adult books down to picture books. My friend Eileen Spinelli will be there signing THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS. Something for everybody. I wanted to say to some of the buyers, wait! I haven’t had a chance to look at that one yet. Nor that one, nor that one! Until next time–. Small worlds and trumpet and rain duets. I was ...

"One of the Survivors" by Susan Shaw
http://www.authorsusanshaw.com/one-of-the-survivors.html
One of the Survivors. What do you do when the world stops making sense? When your mother dies in a house fire trying to save a cat. When 24 of your classmates die in a fire, but you and your best friend survive. When people blame you for surviving and come to your house to throw garbage in your yard and chant "Murderer! Grades 5 to 9. Sally M. Keehn. Author of The First Horse I See. And I Am Regina. One of the Survivors is heart-wrenchingly honest, compelling, and ultimately, satisfyingly triumphant.
"The Boy from the Basement" by Susan Shaw
http://www.authorsusanshaw.com/boy-from-the-basement.html
The Boy from the Basement. This carefully crafted and authentic portrayal of Charlie’s emotional and physical abuse is gracefully matched by Susan Shaw’s inspiring and deeply moving story of recovery. Grades 6 to 9. Then comes the quiet climax, when Charlie finally finds a place. Ages 12 and up. Sept 15, 2004 Issue.
"Tunnel Vision" by Susan Shaw
http://www.authorsusanshaw.com/tunnel-vision.html
Grades 6 to 9. Confluence College Preparatory Academy. St Louis, MO. June 15, 2011 Issue. The author creates a completely believable character in Liza, who often reverts to childlike emotions only to learn the hard way that cold reality takes precedence over even dearly held wishes. Kudos for the unexpected double ending, both illusory and realistic, giving readers a choice. An emotional roller-coaster ride through adolescent angst and thriller suspense. Ages 12 and up.

About Susan Shaw
http://www.authorsusanshaw.com/about.html
I was born in a log cabin in Illinois—no that wasn’t me! Well, maybe I didn’t do my homework, but I read. If it didn't move, I read it. Chances are, I wrote about it, too, in the diary I kept all through my childhood. I’ve heard that that’s called taking notes. Eventually, despite engaging in various activities called play that periodically involved knocking myself out, I grew up. This much amazed my grandmother who said I lived a charmed life. What do I do when I’m not writing?
