When your children are on the spectrum, you learn to see new colours. You find a pattern amid the disorder; mine is plaid. Saturday, September 22, 2012. I'm waving the white flag (and it looks like a dirty pillow case). I've pulled my kids away from the front of bumpers and off bridge railings, so you'd think that the little things wouldn't stress me out. You know what's got me worked up right now? Come out with your gloves up. Ness She responded, "You can either change what's embarrassing you, or decide...

When your children are on the spectrum, you learn to see new colours. You find a pattern amid the disorder; mine is plaid. Wednesday, June 27, 2012. And a hoppy awards day to us! At K's middle school awards ceremony today, his homeroom teacher Mrs S called each student to the front and told the assembled parents and teachers something about him or her, using the child's favourite colour or animal as a guide. I'm so pleased to be presenting K with the award for Commendable Achievement in Mathematics.

When your children are on the spectrum, you learn to see new colours. You find a pattern amid the disorder; mine is plaid. Tuesday, July 10, 2012. What I got for my birthday. Most of us communicate for various reasons: break the ice, test the waters, lighten the mood, make an impression. Aspies usually communicate for one reason: to get facts from one head into another. My daughter isn't a talker, but same communication principal applies. If it's not new information, it's not worth saying. Every family h...

Here are my happiest memories of 2013 in pictures:. Disney World with my husband, kids, and parents (April). When we went 5 years ago, my daughter and I had a meltdown in the happiest restroom on earth, but this time, even though the official story is that we're both too old to believe in fairies, we felt the magic. Dancing wit...

When your children are on the spectrum, you learn to see new colours. You find a pattern amid the disorder; mine is plaid. Saturday, October 05, 2013. Can I give you a hug? I've published a few things about disabilities recently. One was an article about disabilities in the church in the MB Herald. It started with a Hope Centre conference on inclusion last spring, where I met many families with stories begging to be told. Read my article: Can I give you a hug? When your children are on the spectrum, you learn to see new colours. You find a pattern amid the disorder; mine is plaid. Saturday, October 27, 2012. Carly's Fiorina's statement (at the Leadership Summit) "There is a gift in everything. We just need to see it" touched something in me. So is it about attitude, or is it circumstance? And I empathize for those without supports because no one is meant to do it alone. Where does attitude come in? To hope that it existed. To believe that I deserved it. For K:...

When your children are on the spectrum, you learn to see new colours. You find a pattern amid the disorder; mine is plaid. Friday, November 15, 2013. I'm tucking my daughter into bed. I hear a click under her pillow. Do you have your DS? I reach under her pillow and pull out the DS. Because you lied to me, this is going away till tomorrow. This is one of those parenting reflexes that usually escalates kids on the spectrum. And it does. If you saw a homeless person crying on the street, how would you feel?
