Going out of town we stumbled upon the spring festival with horse racing/ shooting, music, food and tourist madness, we even saw a couple laowai (the first in a week or so). In Darchen (the town below Kailash) the law finally caught up with us, slapped us with a small fine and issued temporary permits. So with only several days left in Tibet we are finally legal. This doesn't really change anything except encounters with the police and army usually come with free food. We are now seeking out the authorities instead of evading them. June 11, 2009 at 5:32 PM. Ben and Nils grew up on a small New Zealand sheep farm. They spent their formative years. Toiling in the fields, swimming in the Pacific, tromping over the mountains, and getting in and out of trouble. They now live in Maine and are doing much the same (just more lakes and less Pacific). Prior to rafting colorado at age 90. The rapids were lost due to the Bujagali Dam Project, or sleeping in snow caves to avoid hotel costs and get first tracks, or finishing high school in 3 years to ski a year in Norway.

Several weeks before we left for China, the government closed the Tibetan boarder and started removing all foreigners from the province and the surrounding TAR’s, in anticipation for unrest on the anniversary of the flight of the Deli Lama. News reports on boarder security, military presence, and permits not being issued made our original route through Tibet look even more unlikely but we decided to show up and work it out as we went.
