The Way I See It: June 2014
http://wayiseeit-eleanor.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
The Way I See It. Literally. Figuratively. Occasionally. Sunday, June 29, 2014. Just Another Walk in the Park(s). My legs were awfully stiff this morning, and the only thing for that, I've found, is to move them, so I decided that today I would just walk for the sake of walking. No pushing. No jogging. No attention to pace. Just move. I started out at Blount Cultural Park. Where I got a little obsessed by how gorgeous the clouds were. I decided I still felt pretty good, so I headed to Woodmere Park.

Orthodoxy for Everyone: Why "A Way Forward" Isn't (#umc #umcschism)

June 6, 2014. Why "A Way Forward" Isn't (#umc #umcschism). United Methodist Church. One recent proposal. The heart of the proposal in "A Way Forward". Local churches would have the authority to determine the nature and extent of their ministry with gay and lesbian people, including whether they will or will not allow same gender unions. Each Annual Conference would have the authority to determine whether or not it will allow self-avowed, practicing homosexuals to be ordained. And it would necessitate the...

Author: p.w.eubanks. Unity with Schism, a Mea Culpa. I have made abundantly clear in social media – sometimes to people’s frustration and often too harshly – that I am in favor of schism for the United Methodist Church. I’ve held that view in part because I believe the church to have been hijacked by lobbyists. Differently, function under different rules and still seriously call ourselves one institution? What rules are so sacred to us that they are uncompromising? In the past, I’ve claimed that th...

Is the UMC Getting Played (Again)? | Eremitic Musings

Commentary, theological and political. Is the UMC Getting Played (Again)? Asymp; 4 Comments. A few weeks ago, Good News publicized. That 80, mostly anonymous United Methodist leaders had concluded that the way forward for the Church was to split. To quote Maxie Dunnam. Today, Good News publicized an open letter. So, what has happened here? Have these ministers, in the short time of a few weeks had a radical change of heart? To those who have watched the strategy of Good News and the Confessing movement, ...

Can the General Conference Make Reliable Moral Decisions? | David F. Watson

David F. Watson. Musings and whatnot…. Can the General Conference Make Reliable Moral Decisions? May 19, 2015. Much of the talk in the UMC these days has to do with how we will govern ourselves. Will we stay with a more centralized polity located in a single General Conference? Will we become more congregational in polity? Will we eliminate the General Conference altogether and divide up into smaller bodies of like-minded communities? Can any solution hold together the disparate voices of our church?

Same Sex Marriage and the Future of the UMC. May 6, 2015. A year ago, with input from others, I wrote a blog post called, A Way Forward for a United Methodism? My assumptions about any proposed changes at General Conference include the following:. The more complicated the change, the less likely it will pass. The more places in the Discipline that must be changed, the less likely it will pass. The more radical the change, the less likely that it will pass. Under this scenario the current language of the.

Some Thoughts about the Upcoming United Methodist General Conference 2016, or Why This Church Should Just Give In and Die Already. Not all that long ago, a band of conservatives. In the meantime, the New York Annual Conference. Among other northern conferences, have forged ahead in an effort to uphold equality. Many pastors, as well as a Bishop. Suffice to say, I do not understand the disdain for schism. Jesus himself talks about not wasting our time. It hinges on structural and financial fears that a ch...

Psalm 73 provides us with a great reminder that is both refreshing and exhorting. In times of frustration and sheer disbelief at the ways in which people all sorts of people especially leaders, whether in politics or the press or business or academia seem to get away with wickedness, we need to hear this. The psalmist begins with context and perspective. (Ps. 73:1) We must never forget the character of God He is good. Ps 73:13-14) What did he gain? But what brought him back to his spiritual senses? The p...
