Basking in the Light: December 2013
http://baskingbranch.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Basking in the Light. Monday, December 30, 2013. Ending the year with a whimper, not a bang. Well, our year is ending with a whimper. Our sweet Luna dog became terribly and unexpectedly ill over the weekend. Last night, given a grim prognosis and very iffy, stressful treatment options, we chose to let her go. We are heartbroken. She brought so much joy, laughter, and fun into our home. It will be a blue new year without you, Lunabug. Links to this post. Wednesday, December 18, 2013. Links to this post.

Basking in the Light: The Hawk in My Backyard
http://baskingbranch.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-hawk-in-my-backyard.html
Basking in the Light. Friday, July 24, 2015. The Hawk in My Backyard. I've been thinking about abundance lately. Unlike other parts of the country, the Pacific Northwest did not receive an abundance of snow last winter. But the unseasonably warm weather gave me a few unusual glimpses of wildlife, and that's one of my favorite forms of abundance. One surprising glimpse happened back in February, when a hawk landed in my backyard. Had it tussled with some prey? Which is as much about grief as it is about h...

Basking in the Light: November 2012

Basking in the Light. Friday, November 23, 2012. Sincerity Like a Jewel. 8220;Lois wore sincerity like a jewel,” said Jo. It was the loveliest and most original compliment I’d heard in a long time. Jo was her close friend and caretaker, and she was speaking at Lois’s memorial service. It was the first of two tributes to Lois that especially caught my ear. Still, Brandon and Wes were twenty-two and nearly seventeen, respectively, when Bill and I married. It’s not like I raised them. So when ...Because no ...

Basking in the Light: Bunnies in the Driveway!
http://baskingbranch.blogspot.com/2014/04/bunnies-in-driveway.html
Basking in the Light. Monday, April 21, 2014. Bunnies in the Driveway! This morning I was about to start some laundry when I felt a little nudge to go for a walk instead. The laundry could wait. As I stepped out onto the porch with my camera, I spotted. Bunnies in the driveway! I don't think they were very happy to see me. I snapped a few pictures,. And then slowly, quietly, eased off the porch. And circled around the back of the house to the other side. And one of the rabbits was still there,. This is s...

Basking in the Light: January 2014
http://baskingbranch.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Basking in the Light. Sunday, January 26, 2014. Millie doesn’t wander the property with me anymore. When Luna and I rambled around once or twice a day,. She wasn’t always happy about it. But she was curious enough,. Or jealous enough,. Or lonely enough, to follow. Because Luna explored,. No matter how much I coax her,. She won’t follow me when I’m alone. She might come as far as the porch step,. The lumber pile at the back corner of the house. Bill and I were outside airing up the tires on a trailer.

Basking in the Light: Gluttony and Church Music: All I Want...
http://baskingbranch.blogspot.com/2013/11/gluttony-and-church-music-all-i-want.html
Basking in the Light. Monday, November 4, 2013. Gluttony and Church Music: All I Want. This post is a confession of sorts, so if that’s not your cup of tea, bail now. C S Lewis describes a sort of gluttony that’s not very obvious, which he calls “gluttony of Delicacy” (in contrast to “gluttony of Excess,” which is what we usually think of when we hear the word gluttony). All I want is a cup of tea, weak but not too weak, and the teeniest weeniest bit of really crisp toast.” You see? Take it away and brin...

Basking in the Light. Wednesday, April 17, 2013. A Sure Sign of Spring . . . Even in Central Oregon—the cat’s been rolling in the dirt! Links to this post. Saturday, April 13, 2013. Pop's Truck and the Pink Car. I catch an unexpected whiff of mint and remember Doublemint gum. Sitting in the front seat of Gram’s Cadillac as she ran errands, I knew there would be gum. It was always Wrigley, and always Juicy Fruit, Doublemint, or another flavor – also mint? 8211; that came in a white wrapper. A couple of fl...
