Yes, it's time for another Rate the Rejection! By way of explanation, KR requires that multiple poems be submitted in one document - hence the weird "4 poems - see file" title.). Well, it's an email message. As I mentioned in my post on submitting. Click here for more about the Rate the Rejection series. Yeah, this was d...

Call it a do-it-yourself MFA: 30 hours a week for working, 20 for writing. The goal? To complete a book of poems by 2008. Wednesday, December 13, 2006. I'm going to be spending about 30 hours a week on my regular job. Why 30 hours? When my boss and I started talking about how to divide up those hours across the work week, I wasn't sure what would be best. Three full days? I did know that, if I was going to work half-days, I wanted to have the mornings to write. The organization I work for is fast-pac...

Put yourself in the position of an editor at a respected literary magazine. (Nice, isn't it? Now stop fiddling with your smoking jacket and pay attention.) Say you received a submission from a writer a while ago and decided not to take it, but encouraged him to try again. D That's what I said the earlier one w...

Call it a do-it-yourself MFA: 30 hours a week for working, 20 for writing. The goal? To complete a book of poems by 2008. Tuesday, November 13, 2007. I've been making my way through Kenneth Koch's Collected Poems (and what an odd and brilliant way that is) and thought I'd share his rules for knowing when a poem is ready for the wide open world. (Kenny, forgive the scrambled line breaks - blogger wasn't made for long-lined poems.). Just how good a poem should be. Am I pleased every time I read it? From ex...

CipherBlog: January 2006

http://cipherjournal.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 26, 2006. Do I actually have a blog? It came upon me accidentally: I wanted to comment on another blogger's post, but the price of admission for posting a comment is being a blogger yourself. And so here I am; comment commented, and no plan on what to say next. Things to look for: translation, labor, literature, academic culture. Posted by Lucas at 10:20 PM. View my complete profile. CipherBlog: January 2007

http://cipherjournal.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 07, 2007. I didn't start this blog to piss people off, but somehow or other I've managed to alienate a few people at various times because of things I've said, or not said, in my posts. After my entry yesterday, David wrote to me and said that regardless of my changed tastes, saying that I read what he's written and want to run is a shitty thing to say to a friend. Is it radical enough? Is it engaged enough? As if engaged or radical or edgy meant anything in medieval China! And yet, here ...

CipherBlog: October 2006

Friday, October 06, 2006. THE TECHNOLOGY OF WRITING. When Nathaniel Mackey came, he talked about the relationship between how he writes and how he reads aloud. He pointed to a passage in. In the chapter called "Sight-Specific, Sound Specific.":. What, for that matter, does an unvaried margin sound like? We may be used to thinking about the effect of technological and material developments on poetry. We may understand how the declining price of paper allowed for formal poetic practices now considered ...

Saturday, January 06, 2007. We've just returned to New Haven from three weeks of family time in northern California and Chicago. Some new books, too, that I'm looking through or about to, by W. Somerset Maugham. Which I'm including to my list of links, to the right. I wonder what he would think about that. I'll have to ask him. Posted by Lucas at 3:41 PM. I need an essay help. CipherBlog: July 2006

http://cipherjournal.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 02, 2006. We spent the last two days driving from Connecticut to Chicago. My dad has moved since a year and a half ago, the last time we were here. That house was also not the house I grew up in. Walking through this house and seeing the same art, furniture, design, and gestures of personality and style, all in a different location, I get a twin sense of familiarity and newness that is, I think, equivalent to reading a good translation. Once upon a time. Fairy tales are children's wishes. Sunday, 4 January 2015. I do not know anymore. It's only four days into 2015 and I don't feel good already. I do not even know why. There are things lingering at the back of my mind that even I can't put my finger on, let alone solve. It's just that feeling. I am probably homesick. Actually, I am homesick. It sucks not being able to hear the voices and laughter of your loved ones - through phone calls do not count. I do not know. Friday, 2 January 2015.

John encourages the believers in his letter 1 John writing that “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear” (4:18). God is love and God casts out fear. Paul reminds the Roman Christians that “If God is for us, who can be against us? 8221; (8:31) Nothing, not even fear can separate us from “the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (8:39).
