A Year in Tanzania

A Year in Tanzania. Thursday, March 31, 2011. Loliondo is the last place you’d expect a miracle, an area in northern Tanzania so remote that there are no signs of civilization. The roads that do exist are so rocky, any car that ventures on them inevitably suffers at least one punctured tire. No one complains of going to Loliondo and not being cured. No one tries to explain the miracle. They only wonder if they can make it to Loliondo before the miracle runs out. Wednesday, March 2, 2011. At the Mwika cam...

A Year in Tanzania: June 2010

http://ayearintanzania.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

A Year in Tanzania. Friday, June 18, 2010. A brief and fond farewell. It is the time of the semester when every brain cell I’m using has been borrowed or rented for the sole purpose of grading 250 tests, essays, revisions, etc. Those cells will remain that way until I board a plane on August 2nd for the States. Bottom line: no blog for a while. Or you can send a check (with my name on the memo line) for next year’s venture to:. 4980 S. 118th St., Suite D. Omaha, NE 68137. Let me now give at least twenty ...

A Year in Tanzania: February 2010

http://ayearintanzania.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

A Year in Tanzania. Friday, February 26, 2010. On a visit to Tanzania, my parents wanted to see the market at Moshi. I’d been there twice with friends and when I tried to find it the third time on my own, I didn’t. My plan was to ask someone at the bus terminal and follow the pointed finger and then ask again if I needed to. I did not tell my parents this. 8220;Oh dear,” said my mother, “I think I’ve just started World War III.”. He was joking.). So we were left to face charges of injustice and image the...

A Year in Tanzania: The Song of Faith

http://ayearintanzania.blogspot.com/2011/02/song-of-faith.html

A Year in Tanzania. Sunday, February 13, 2011. The Song of Faith. Every evening, I eat with Edda, the assistant bursar at Mwika, and her husband Godrick. As part of the evening routine, Omega the house girl feeds their baby Faith. At times, the distracting of Faith during porridge would fall to Omega’s sister Lea, who also lives with the family. She would sing a song called, “Piga makofi,” which means “clap the hands.”. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Song of Faith. View my complete profile.

A Year in Tanzania: The Complicated Act of Sharing

http://ayearintanzania.blogspot.com/2011/03/complicated-act-of-sharing.html

A Year in Tanzania. Wednesday, March 2, 2011. The Complicated Act of Sharing. At the Mwika campus of Stefano Moshi Memorial University College where I teach English courses, I found my students studying for a phonology test. They had removed desks from the classrooms, put them under the shade of the trees, and quizzed each other over the fine details of tongue frontness, lip rounding, allophones and phonemes. But Joseph didn’t like that answer. First, it makes him responsible. Second, it gi...

A Year in Tanzania: October 2010

http://ayearintanzania.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

A Year in Tanzania. Saturday, October 30, 2010. The Mwika campus is an active one. It’s a combination of two or maybe three educational institutions – Lutheran Bible School, a school of theology, and a third campus of Stefano Moshi Memorial University College. At its center is a church. There’s also a kindergarten and just beyond that past the hedges is a primary school. All of these form a collective routine. Finalized by CLANG CLANG. At lunch, we hear the same clang thing all over again. We were not wa...

A Year In Sunsets | Wherever I am, the sun sets…

A Year In Sunsets. Wherever I am, the sun sets…. July 21, 2013. Jeremiah 33:20-21 NLT – “This is what the LORD says: If you can break my covenant with the day and the night so that one does not follow the other, only then will my covenant with my servant David be broken. Only then will he no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne. The same is true for my covenant with the Levitical priests who minister before me. But until then, we may rest in knowing that as long as the sun awakens our mornings...

A Year in Swanage

Sunday, 12 August 2012. We have revamped last years RNLI Raft Race winning raft "KONTIKI" with new sponsons. The sponsons were fine but the boat, despite a new coat of paint leaked like a sieve. The danger is that the new sponsons having less bouyancy will not aid the the boat in staying afloat. A lot of water came in last year as well so I'm wondering whether they actually stopped us sinking in the end. Saturday, 4 August 2012. Friday, 3 August 2012. It seemed like it was going to be a dull evenings rac...

Tribulations d'une Française en Finlande

Envoyer à un ami. Tribulations d'une Française en Finlande. In the night, fallen so abruptly, surrounded by luggage ready to be closed, drinking coffee with Baileys for fault of milk, playing again and again Paavoharju, those songs sounding like the memories of a brilliant summer which would have never happened. I can let autumn come now. There is renewed strength and beauty to tap in. Pure, simple emotion makes me cry more than sadness. The neverending journey, and a home in our hearts. Not that I would...

A Year in Thailand

A Year in Thailand. Sawat-dii, sawasad-dii. Hello and Welcome. Monday, June 16, 2008. Returning to the Land of Smiles. I had almost forgotten how much I missed this place. How much I missed the feel of my bare feet padding along the cool stones of the temples. How much I missed the exploding flavors of each Thai dish that hit my tongue, How much I missed the humidity that filled my senses with each breath, but most of all how much I missed the smiles on each and every persons face. Ten minutes later I em...

365 Days of Gratitude

Saturday, July 14, 2012. July 14, 2012: Movies. Today I'm thankful for movies. Specifically movies that bring me back. You know, waaaay back. I'm spending the night kicking back, churning some strawberry sour cream ice cream, and watching a movie that I might literally be able to recite every line of. Sleepless in Seattle. This movie has the same power that Celine Dion songs possess to take me right back to the nineties in a nanosecond. Links to this post. Wednesday, June 13, 2012. If I could I would use...

A Year in the Bloor

Tuesday, February 15, 2011. My Favourite 36 (36? That's Right, 36. It's been some time since my last post. Alas, I did not win another year's pass to The Bloor because they didn't have the contest this year to win the pass- I had a great quote all lined up too . oh well. Nonetheless, The Bloor is still the best dang theatre around and I will continue to go there and write reviews as well. I have no idea if anyone is actually reading the reviews, but if nothing else, it's good to practise your spelling.
