Partially Obstructed View: Theatre review: Richard II (Shakespeare's Globe)
http://partially-obstructed-view.blogspot.com/2015/07/theatre-review-richard-ii-shakespeares.html
Writing down what I think about theatre I've seen in That London, whether I've been asked to or not. Tuesday, 21 July 2015. Theatre review: Richard II. Back to the Globe for the second night in a row, and right back to the beginning of the octet that ends with Richard III. In fact I can now say I've seen all of Shakespeare's Histories at this venue, now that Richard II. With Richard distracted by a military campaign in Ireland, Bolingbroke returns to England to mount a rebellion. At first he says he ...

Partially Obstructed View: Theatre review: Othello (RSC / RST)

Writing down what I think about theatre I've seen in That London, whether I've been asked to or not. Saturday, 25 July 2015. Iqbal Khan's production of Othello. In a play inextricably associated with the title character's race, the publicity around the latest revival has centred on the fact that, for the first time at the RSC, Khan has also cast a black actor as Iago. By William Shakespeare is booking in repertory until the 28th of August at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. I think Iag...

Partially Obstructed View: Theatre review: Grand Hotel

Writing down what I think about theatre I've seen in That London, whether I've been asked to or not. Thursday, 6 August 2015. Theatre review: Grand Hotel. After a number of big musical hits there, director Thom Southerland returns to Southwark Playhouse with another musically complex ensemble drama, though I liked this one a lot better than 2013's Titanic. Based on Vicki Baum's book Menschen Im Hotel. Noble, and he sees how many of his fellow guests are in as dire straits as he is. As You Like It. Re-rev...

Partially Obstructed View: Theatre review: Bakkhai

Writing down what I think about theatre I've seen in That London, whether I've been asked to or not. Friday, 31 July 2015. The second full-scale show in the Almeida's Greek season goes for the opposite aesthetic to the first: Where Robert Icke's Oresteia. As authentic in that they're played by real women - speak or sing their lines in unison. The former convention leads to a bit of gender-bending, which is appropriate enough when the play is Euripides' Bakkhai. Pentheus (Bertie Carvel) is Dionysus' cousi...

Partially Obstructed View: Theatre review: American Idiot
http://partially-obstructed-view.blogspot.com/2015/07/theatre-review-american-idiot.html
Writing down what I think about theatre I've seen in That London, whether I've been asked to or not. Tuesday, 28 July 2015. Theatre review: American Idiot. Green Day's one of those bands I never really followed too closely but, as it turns out, I know and like a lot more of their songs than I would have guessed. In any case they're an unlikely choice to get a jukebox musical, but it happened with American Idiot. Song-shouter Amelia Lily also appears as Johnny's girlfriend Whatsername. As You Like It.
