Television theorist Jason Mittell has just written a very thoughtful essay about Why he's not a fan of the show Mad Men. Jason makes a good point of noting that fandom and anti-fandom are both sort of juvenille positions for a cultural critic to take up. Let's face it, if "why does this suck? In my own work, I've tended toward online ethnography, or in it...

Last night I dreamt that E and I took Andrew to ManRay. It wasn't the "new" spot, either. It was just ManRay, though it didn't look quite the same. The layout was different. There was only one main room, and a narrow hallway leading to it. We took a bus there - or was this a different part of the dream? Then we went in and Andrew started running around the mostly empty place. He had no shirt on. E and some friends I couldn't recognize were talking and having drinks. I ran over to Andrew and w...

Based on a true story. Swim, read, climb, repeat. August 2012, Hong Kong. And I were eating at Tim Ho Wan. I'd go back to Turkey," she said, "it's beautiful. It's affordable. The food's great. but you know what I'd want to do? There are these boats they have called. What does that get us? Roman ruins. Lagoons. That looks fun. What about this place called Fethiye? It goes past a town called Olympos, and oh what's this guidebook say? You can rock climb on the seaside cliffs of Olympos? But our driver pulle...

A Tale of Two Additions" or "Great Expansions". Tuesday, July 21, 2009. The Many Faces of Alexandra. Earlier this month, we visited family in NY. Auntie Carrie came over for a few hours and brought her camera. She captured Alexandra's many facial expressions perfectly. The only one missing is with her tongue hanging out. That's a constant face now that Alexandra has two teeth. Go baby go! Get the flash player here: http:/ www.adobe.com/flashplayer. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Follow me on Twitter.

Regularize your plurals - cannylinguist. Apr 23rd, 2004 11:28 pm. Bill Poser has an entry. At Language Log discussing creative pluralizations of borrowings from a foreign language with which the writer seems to have just a passing acquaintance. This is actually a fairly common phenomenon, often observed in plural terms of Latin ancestry. The example that Bill discusses, rectii. Appears in a review of The Whole Beast: Nose to Tail Eating. I wonder if this crops up in the world of food writing more often?
