Came to grief: 9th March 1888 at/near Atherfield Ledge. Sirenia under the command of Captain MacIntyre, out of San Francisco, via Cape Horn bound for Dunkirk with 25 crew as well as the Captain, his wife, their 3 children and their woman servant. The Sirenia was a three masted, full rigged ship with a strong iron and steel hull, weight 1,588 tons. Came to grief: 31st January 1892 at/near Atherfield Ledge. Cargo: cotton, maize, eight and a half tons of gold and silver, and 500 sacks of mail. William Slaney Lewis (Brook). SS Eider, out of New York bound for Bremen with 227 passengers and 167 crew, was a four masted, two funnelled screw steamer, gross weight over 4,700 tons and over 430 feet long. A few of the triumphs and disasters from the 18th,. 19th & 20th Centuries. Probably the best known wreck is that of The Clarendon, at Blackgang in 1836. Left St. Kitts (W. Indies) on 27th Aug 1836 with a cargo of sugar, molasses & rum, under the command of Captain Samuel Walker, carrying 11 passengers and 17 crew. At 6am on the morning of 11th October, in a howling gale and huge seas, The Clarendon hit the beach broadside, rolling over on her side. She broke up in less than ten minutes.
