Aspirations | Back to Japan

https://backtojapan.wordpress.com/2013/05/19/aspirations

My fiancee made the (very valid) point that my post are too text heavy. I do prefer the feel of some of my older posts. So I’m going to try to apply more graphics to each article. I also have a dearth of photos from my time in the land of the rising sun. This will be first of several post where I display said photos, and tell whatever stories may be attached to them. 8221; he would shout, throwing his arms in the air. “Ganbare! 8221; he exclaimed as his little pet turtle trotted along carefree.

Japanese Dating Culture | Back to Japan

https://backtojapan.wordpress.com/2011/08/07/japanese-dating-culture

This article is mostly for the benefit of Western readers. However, I feel it can also help Japanese readers who would like to better understand the Western perspective of Japanese dating. I’ve included my thoughts as a Westerner on Japanese dating culture for that reason. Virgin or veteran, I feel for any Westerner or Easterner who dates or aspires to date inter-culturally this is worth a read. Who knows? You might just understand the other half a little better after this. It was filed under Culture.

But what is common sense for some is fantastic for others. My previous post on Japanese dating culture. Received a bit of positive feedback, and I intend on writing more articles in that vein. Something along the lines of everything no one tells you about Japan. If you are interested in learning more about Japan and it’s culture, please consider reading the following:. 21st Century Japan: A New Sun Rising. By Trevor W. Harrison. By H Paul Varley. Japanese student, office worker, and many more. While ...

Tenjin | Back to Japan

https://backtojapan.wordpress.com/2010/07/31/tenjin

This past weekend I ventured to Osaka. Not an uncommon event as I live rather close to it. Since moving out here I go to Osaka about once a month. Yet this trip had purpose. The Tenjin Matsuri. We returned around 3am. Saturday morning was a special treat, the lack of sleep not including. The friend of a friend gave me tickets to the National Bunraku Theater, and so I was able to see my first buraku show. Bunraku. There’s something about the energy at a festival I’ll always love; one I love mo...Leave a R...

Sometimes I write things. | Jenn in Japan

https://jenninjapan.wordpress.com/2011/11/10/sometimes-i-write-things

If you are a dreamer, come in. If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar, a hoper, a prayer, a magic-bean-buyer. If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire, for we have some flax-golden tales to spin. Come in! Sometimes I write things. November 10, 2011. This little experiment in sound appeared this morning. Rhyme. Rhythm. Syllables. Consonance. Assonance. Alliteration. Brevity. It’s probably best if you read this aloud…just a suggestion. I miss so many moments. And my meager mind is. I lose my equilibrium.

However, I was able to pass all my courses and secure my M.A. in Japanese. I had only applied to one PhD program (at the University of Toronto) though, and unfortunately I was not accepted. Melon Pan: Epic Festival Trip: Part One

http://laurennomelonpan.blogspot.com/2010/08/epic-festival-trip-part-one.html

A sweet bread that tastes like honeydew. Epic Festival Trip: Part One. Because there is so much to report, I'm splitting this into two posts. Here's the first 3 days of my trip. Ok, so I got back from my trip on Sunday, but I'm still recovering. I'm exhausted . But I need to recap before I forget everything, so here we go! I watched for a couple of hours, actually, until it ended around 10:30. Then I remember how I was hungry and grabbed some food at a conbini and went to bed. Day Two didn't have near as...

Melon Pan: November 2010

http://laurennomelonpan.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

A sweet bread that tastes like honeydew. Getting Sick in Japan. I know it's been three months since I posted. I'm sorry. I didn't really know how to follow up climbing Mt. Fuji, so I just kept putting it off. This post still won't really measure up to the last, but at least it's something, right? I'll try to keep a more regular schedule, too, from here on. Sunday night, my throat started hurting. I figured it would go away, and tried to ignore it as best I could, but didn't get much sleep. I'm feeling mo...

Melon Pan: Epic Festival Trip: Part Two

http://laurennomelonpan.blogspot.com/2010/08/epic-festival-trip-part-two.html

A sweet bread that tastes like honeydew. Epic Festival Trip: Part Two. So we left off with me in Yokote after seeing the Akita Kanto Festival with all the lanterns. Day Four started off badly. I didn't set my alarm the night before, because I'd been naturally waking up around 6 everyday and wasn't in any hurry. However, I was apparently exhausted, because I woke up at 10:03. Check-out was at 10. This was not good. The station was huge, but there was an information stand set up for visitors coming for the...

A sweet bread that tastes like honeydew. Here it is, the Sports Day post. And really, a picture is worth a thousand words, so here's a bunch of moving pictures to tell you about it better than I could. And that was pretty much my Sports Day. I just chilled and watched the kids compete. It was entertaining, definitely, though I wish I could have been a part of it somehow. Maybe for the next one. 5/22/2010 11:42:00 AM Category: my school. A sweet bread that tastes like honeydew. First Week of School and Talk of School. Instead I'll talk about how my school runs, for those who aren't familiar with the Japanese system. This isn't my picture, it's from wikipedia, but my teachers' room looks almost exactly like that. My desk is on the inside facing away from the window, right in the middle. The other ALT has a desk right across from me, though he's only there on Mondays and Wednesday. Japanese Language Teacher: Good morning, everyone. And tha...

A sweet bread that tastes like honeydew. I'm not entirely sure how I did it, but I climbed to the summit of Mt. Fuji. Our journey began early Friday morning. I take the first train out of Hitachi (5:12am) and meet up with four other climbers. We have to take a long series of trains and one bus to get to the 5th station where we'll start our climb, but we we finally make it early in the afternoon. Was good to have later. Somewhere between 10 and 10:30, we finally reached our hut. And there was much re...

Back to Japan – Travelling back to Japan one word at a time

Travelling back to Japan one word at a time. In 1996 I arrived in Japan for a two year stint teaching English. Apart from a brief stopover in Narita on the way back from Sydney, I’ve never returned. Can I write my way back? This is not my computer nor my glasses. I don’t own a Mac, but I did have an iMac once. This is a second Child’s Page, and in my world of journalism, we call this a stock image. It will work for now, until I can come up with a better one.
